The Secret Behind Vimshottari Dasha System

There are many types of Dashās, ten of which are based on Nakshatras. Vimshottari Dashā is held to be the most important Dashā System in Jyotisha of Vedic-Purānic tradition. Most often, astrologers of this tradition do not even take into consideration other dashā systems and base their conclusions solely upon Vimshottari.

Following points must be considered before deciding anything in this regard :

(1) BPHS (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra) never said solar year should should be used for Vimshottari;
(2) BPHS clearly said that Vimshottari must be computed from Moon's position and not from Sun's position;
(3) Vimshottari year is of 360 days which may have two meanings : lurar year of 360 tithis or savana year of 360 days, but this savana year of 360 days is a later myth with neither any scientific validity supporting any solar cycle of 360 days nor any basis in ancient sisshantas, and
(4) the final proof is Suryasiddhantic software 'Kundalee' which must be tested before rushing to conclusions.

Vimshottari is the most important dasha system according to all "authorities" , but owing to wrong methods of its computation, it has become less precise ; as a result instead of rectifying their own errors some modern messiahs are giving more weight other dasha systems, some of which are not even mentioned in BPHS. But if ancient method of computation is used, Vimshottari Dasha proves to be to be the most influential dasha system

But there are two obstacles which prevent accurate timing of events with the help of vimshottari system. One is the use of Drik-pakshiya mathematics, ie, modern astronomy , for finding true longitudes of planets and ascendant, etc. Second problem is the use of solar year for reckoning, in spite of the fact that all ancient texts explicitly mention that the year of vimshottari system comprises of 360 days only. Due to these two errors, the timing of events in vimshottari system errs by many years.

Vimshottari system is based upon lunar nakshatra, hence its year ought to be lunar. Indian tradition year is a ccombination of solar and lunar, known as luni-solar year, like other ancient systems. In lunar year, there are 360 tithis or lunar days, which is the year of vimshottari system. 360 tithis are equal to 354.37 solar days. Therefore, there is a difference of 3% between solar year and vimshottari year. Add to this 3% error the difference on account of Drik-pakshiya and Saur-pakshiya positions of Moon. Drik-pakshiya world is the phenomenal sensory world , which is manifest to human sense organs. It is the material world. Saur-pakshiya world is the non-material world in which deities reside. All ancient texts of Vedic-Purānic tradition say that the Grahas of Jyotisha are gods and are diverse incarnations of God. God and gods are conscious entities and it is wrong to conceptualize them as material bodies. Material planets intruded into astrology only during past one or two millenia, but even today there are a large number of astrologers in India who refuse to accept computer softwares based upon modern astronomy, and use traditional almanacs or panchāngas. These traditional panchāngas are crudely made, yet the vimshottari timings based upon them prove to be far more accurate than those based upon materialist astronomy. Now, highly precise software based upon traditional Surya-siddhāntic system is also in the market, distributed as a freeware for philanthropic purpose. If birth-time is approximately correct, and few very good or very bad events in the life of a person is known, then precise birth-time can be fixed, and thereafter very accurate forecasts can be drawn from this software, accurate upto prāna-dashā. This software has been tested for natural disasters like floods, earthquakes, cyclones, etc and the result is 100% positive. Total annual and fortnightly (actually, during solar nakshatra) rainfall data of past 135 years of India have been tested, and this software is 100% accurate. But this software is not based upon the faulty interpretation of Surya-siddhānta by E. Burgess. Instead, ancient Surya-siddhāntic methods have been used in it.

The maximum amount of correction made in mean Moon according to Surya-siddhānta is nearly 1.5 degrees less than that made according to modern astronomy. It is nearly 1 / 9 of a nakshatra which is equal to 13˚:20́ . Due to this factor alone, vomshottari period of Venus, Saturn and Rahu (lunar node) will vary by 2 years and more. Add to it the difference due to descrepancies between Surya-siddhāntic mean Moon with the mean Moon of materialist astronomy. And then add the 3% error due to wrong year imposed upon vimshottari system. Total error in timing of vimshottari dashās will be over 5 years in modern era, when differences between mean planets of Surya-siddhānta show minimum divergence from those of materialist astronomy. In distant ages, the difference was greater. In 21000 years, difference between Drik-pakshiya and Saur-pakshiya positions of planets increases by 180˚. Within a few centuries, Drik-pakshiya astronomy will lose its charm in astrology as vimshottari dashās will show intolerable errors.

Even today, Drik-pakshiya astronomy gives errors of ± 5 years in timing of vimshottari dashās. As a result, 19% of Mahā-dashās and a much greater portion of antar-dashās are wrong. Pratyantar, sukshma and prāna dashās are almost always in the wrong. As a result, astrologers take a recourse to other dashā systems, palmistry, numerology, etc for satisfying their clients. Very few persons are trying to test the Surya-siddhāntic software, due to the venomous propaganda against Surya-siddhānta by materialists. Surya-siddhānta is not a text of materialist astronomy, and it is interpreted materialistically by materialists, by comparison with planetary positions. The proof of Surya-siddhānta is Phalit Jyotisha ( predictive astrology) based upon it, it is wrong to use modern astronomy as a yardstick for testing the reliability of Surya-siddhānta. I have met persons who refuse to test Surya-siddhāntic software of Phalit Jyotisha named 'Kundalee', calling Surya-siddhānta to be an outdated and useless work ! Even criminals get a chance to prove themselves, but Surya-siddhānta is denied this chance in a materialist age. By rejecting the only accurate method of astrology, who will prove to be a loser ?

Now let us talk about the design of Vimshottari system. Arrange the planets according to the plan as depicted in upper picture. This arrangement is based upon planetary distances. Omit Rahu, Ketu and Moon initially, which are not full planets. Inner planets, including Sun, are in the right half of the upper picture. Outer planets are on the left side of the upper picture. Now add up their duration of years as given in the vimshottari dashā system. In left half, we get

(Saturn 19) + (Jupiter 16) + (Mars 7) = 42 years

and in right half we get

(Mercury 17) + (Venus 20) + (Sun 6) = 43 years

Total of all 9 planets is 120 lunar years in the vimshottari system. Both halves should have 60 years each. Left half in upper picture has a deficit of 18 years, which only Rahu can give, and right half has a deficit of 17 years which only a combination of Ketu and Moon can supply. Thus we get the lower picture of vimshottari dashā system. Rahu and Ketu must be placed opposite to each other, and Moon should be placed alongwith the Sun but not between Sun and any planet ( i.e., Venus). It is safe to put Rahu and Ketu away from Sun and Moon . Since distances from the Sun was the basis of this plan, vimshottari dashā system ought to start with Sun. As in the lower picture, we get the sequence Sun : Moon : Mars : Rahu : Jupiter : Saturn : Mercury : Ketu : Venus which is the sequence given in all ancient texts, esp. by Sage Parāshara.

In adhyāya 3, khanda 16 of Chāndogya Upanishada, there are 7 shlokas which describe three stages in the lifespan of a person, being of 24, 44 and 48 years respectively, which are the number of syllables in three important Vedic metres Gayatri, Trishtup and Jagati. Total lifespan of a human being is here said to be of 116 years.

In Vimshottari dashā system full lifespan of a human being is equal to 120 lunar years, which is equal to 116.4 solar years which, when rounded off, is same as that given in the Chāndogya Upanishada.

One question remains to be answered : what is the rationale behind the number of years assigned to different planets in the vimshottari dashā system ? Who will find a plausible answer to this intriguing question ?

Non-Indian Variants of Vimshottari System

"Firdaria" is etymologically related to same root (Greek : periodos , Sanskrit : Paridhi )) from which English word "period" has been derived. In Firdaria system, for diurnal charts the period begins with the Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Saturn, Jupiter , Mars, Rahu and Ketu. Each one has a different time range : Sun 10 years, Venus 8 , Mercury 13, Moon 9, Saturn 11, Jupiter 12, Mars 7, Rahu 3 and Ketu 2 years. For nocturnal charts, the period begins with the Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Rahu, Ketu, Sun, Venus, Mercury , each planet having same durations. "

If Moon, Rahu and Ketu are omitted, both diurnal and nocturnal sequences in Firdaria system are as follows :

Sun, Venus, Mercury, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars : ( Diurnal )
: ( Nocturnal )

The nocturnal sequence is same as the diurnal, only the starting poing is different, Moon instead of the Sun. Now, reverse the sequence. We get :

Sun , Mars , Jupiter , Saturn , Mercury , Venus

Hence, if seqience is reversed, Firdaria System is same as Indian Vimshottari, excepting the placing of Moon and its nodes. Following is the Vimshottari sequence followed by reversed Firdaria Sysyem :

Sun , Moon , Mars , Rahu , Jupiter , Saturn , Mercury , Ketu , Venus :- Vimshottari

Sun , Ketu , Rahu , Mars , Jupiter , Saturn , Moon , Mercury , Venus :- Firdaria

Now, compare this reversed firdaria sequence with the circular design of Vimshottari shown in pictures above. In Firdaria System, Moon and its nodes have been placed exactly at the juncture of both halves, i.e., Moon placed between Saturn and Mercury at the top, and nodes placed between Mars and Sun at the bottom. Thus, Firdaria System sprang from the same source which gave rise to Vimshottari. If durations of planets are scrutinized, Firdaria Sysyem does not yield the symmetrical arrangement as found in the case of Vimshottari as shown above. Hence, Vimshottari seems to be an original system and Firdaria is a derived and consequently a later development.

Both Vimshottari and Firdaria systems are related to the planetary order Moon, Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, known as the Chaldean Order in the West. Put two triangles within a circle, one placed over the other inversely. Put Sun + Moon at the apex of first triangle, and then put Mercury and then Venus at other two vertices in a clockwise manner. Then, put Mars, Jupiter and Saturn at the vertices of second triangle in such a way that Mars of second triangle falls between SunMoon and Mercury of first triangle. You will get the sequence of the weekdays. This sequence is also wrongly ascribed to the Chaldeans, although Chaldeans knew it.

To put it otherwise, put the planets in weekday sequence around the circumference of a circle and read their names alternately, you will get the sequence of planets according to distances.

Vimshottari Timings for Planets of Mixed Attributes

Often a planet is both good and bad, how to decide when we get which result?

Often a planet possesses both good and bad attributes. How we should decide when we get which result during the dashās of such a planet of mixed attributes ? For instance, if a student takes appears in an examination during the dashā of such a planet, whether he/will get through or fail? Or will he hover at the passing point ?

For instance, if Jupiter is in moolatrikona in a particular horoscope , it is highly auspicious on account of that. But if it is lord of 3rd and 6th houses at the same time, it is highly malefic as well.

It is wrong to assume that these opposite attributes cancel each other. In rainfall analysis, I found that such planets cause excessive rainfall on account of being in moolatrikona, but cause destruction from rains and/or flooding due to their malefic nature.

I have worked for many years in rain prediction, and there I had faced tricky questions. What will be total amount of rainfall due to a planet which is good (eg, exalted) and bad (eg, in 12th house)? The answer I found, from analysis of past data of 136 years procured from IITM (Pune) is that net result will be nearly ±5% of normal rainfall, if other planets do not influence that particular region (ie, have no aspect and no relation with rain's kāraka). But places pierced (viddha) by malefic planets in Sarvatobhadra chakra in that region will be badly hit by excessive or scanty rainfall depending upon magnitude of aspect, and places pierced by benefics will be blessed with rains conducive to good harvest.

In individual horoscopes, similar situations, however, produce different problems. Many persons are confused about malefic and benefic planets. Jupiter as lord of 3rd and 6th houses is malefic, but if it is situated in mooltrikona, it is benefic as well. Now a question arises : when such a planet will give its good results, and when its malefic fruits will be reaped ?

Rule-I :

The answer is simple : during MD (mahādashā) of Jupiter, one will get good results during AD (antardashā) of Jupiter's own AD or ADs of friendly relatives, and bad results during ADs of enmical planets. This principle works down to prāndashā level. For instance, if such a mixed Jupiter is kāraka of sukshma-dashā, it will give give good results during prāna-dashā of its friends and bad results during prāna-dashā of its enemies.

For instance, a native topped school board exams during Jupiter's MD and Jupiter's AD (pratyantara and sukshma were of auspicious planets too). But the same native failed to get through the examinations just two years later during AD of Saturn, although Saturn was lord of 4th and 5th houses and was therefore auspicious for that native. The cause was mutual enmity and conjunction (yuti) relation between Jupiter and Saturn. Jupiter gave its good results during its own AD , but during Saturn's AD mainly the malefic results of Jupiter were manifest, benefic results of both Jupiter and Saturn lied dormant. It was the worst period in the life of that native. He could not leave his house for a long period due to illness, depression and bad relations with everyone, and failed in examinations.

But during Saturn's MD and Jupiter's AD, things were good for the same native, because Saturn, being an auspicious planet (kendresh plus trikonesh) gave its good results through its yuti relative jupiter, and suppressed the bad effects of malefic Jupiter due to mutual enmity. It was the best period in the life of same native and he excelled in whatever he attempted ! Thus, Jupiter's MD gave both best and worst results in the life of a single native.

It is a general principle, which works only when aspects of both planets (eg, planets causing MD and AD) are nearly equal upon the bhāva we are analyzing. If any one of them has very strong influence in comparison to the other planet over that particular bhāva, the stronger planet will break the above rule and give its own good or bad fruits in proportion of its strength.

Net result becomes more complex when influences of other planets are also considered, which we must do, because many influences are effective for whole life irrespective of dashā. For instance, a person will not become long during MD of Saturn and dwarf during MD of Mercury.

Rule-II :

Now let us consider another problem. Suppose we are in a situation in which we an answer in binary language or yes or no. Eg., whether one will pass or fail in an examination, live or die during a critical surgery, etc. Mixed answers will not do under such circumstances. Such cases are rare when a patients neither lives nor dies, and relapses in a coma, or a student's result is washed away by floods in the board office.

In such situations, we have to evaluate the net auspiciousness or inauspiciousness of all the five kāraka planets of five levels of Vimshottari, taking into account benefic and malefic properties of each of them. Long practice coupled with intuition developed by means of inner purity helps in this evaluation. During such an evaluation, an exalted planet in 12th mansion must be counted as a normal planet.

Only general outlines are presented here. Both of above laws work always work perfectly, but only when we follow the siddhānta (mathematics) of ancient sages.

Prevalent methods of computing Vimshottari dashās contain two major sources of error in timing, one on account of Drikpakshiya Moon and another on account of wrong duration of 'year' used. Canonical texts strictly define Vimshottari's year to be of 360 days. Solar year is slightly over 365 days. Hence, Solar year must not be used for Vimshottari. Vimshottari is made from lunar asterism (nakshatra). Hence its year is lunar. Lunar year is of 360 lunar days (tithis). This is Vimshottari's year. Unfortunately, few astrologers use this correct year for Vimshottari computations. As a result, there is a 3.07% error in the length of Vimshottari year. If true moon is acurately computed, Vimshottari timing at birth will be correct, but will err by one year after 32.57 years, by two years after 65 years, and so on. As a result, 8% of mahādashā timings and 70% of antar-dashā timings will be wrong ! Very few persons will have accurate pratyantaras in their Vimshottari tables ! If birthtime true moon is also wrong, there will be greater error !

Among all the Vedic softwares I have hitherto seen, only two softwares give the option of selecting lunar year in computing Vimshottari, and few people take advantage of these options ! New theories of predictive astrology (Phalit Jyotisha) are being invented to account for the mismatch in predictions and reality, instead of trying the ancient method of sages.

Some practising astrologers knew this mismatch in timing, but did not know the reason. Dr Kāmeshwar Upādhyāya, former editor of Vishwa Panchānga published by BHU (Benaras Hindu University), told me many years ago that all planets start giving results many months before their real Vimshottari timing begins. At that time, he was using solar year for Vimshottari reckoning. He is one of the most busy practising astrologers of Varanasi and has analysed a remendous number of horoscopes made with the help of all sorts of methods. Now he is convinced that lunar year should be used for Vimshottari reckoning, but fears that majority of astrologers will become his opponent due to professional reasons, hence keeps quiet but uses lunar year in his own computations. Same is the case with some other reputed astrologers.

But there is another, more serious, problem : use of Drikpakshiya Moon in Vedic Astrology, which results in considerable error in Vimshottari reckoning. But the magnitude of this error remains constant throughout the life of a native. For instance, if a planet starts giving its results 6 months before its computed time according to lunar year, all planets will show same error of 6 months throughout the life of that native. Hence, it will be easy to recognize that there is an error of 6 months, which can be remedied by using Saurpakshiya correctives according to ancient techniques. Magnitude of this error is different for different persons, sometimes running into years !

How long this wrong Vimshottari year will prevail is a matter of our collective choice. Test of the pudding lies in tasting it. Predictive (Phalita) astrology of Vedic sages is an exact science, provided we keep true to their Ganita. Grahas of Vedic Jyotisha are deities, according to all ancient authorities, and deities cannot be perceived sensorily. I have dared to write on this blasphemous topic in an age of materialism, in which material objects of sky are believed to be deities. Let me see what is the reaction ! -VJ

The Secret Magic of Vimshottari

It is a universally accepted fact that any faultless astrological technique of exact timing of events either does not exist or lies hidden, although philistine astrologers (nakshatrasoochakas) may declare themselves to be omniscient.

All known methods in Vedic Astrology can be divided into two categories, as far as mathematics is concerned : (1) those dependent upon modern physical astronomy and (2) those relying on traditional methods. Both these categories have numerous variants. Major problem in the first camp is astrologically correct value of ayanāmsha, and main problem in second camp is computational crudities of various types.

We assume that both these camps take for granted that in mathematics sidereal (nirayana) system is correct and in predictive astrology (phalita jyotisha) Brihat-Parāshara-Horā-Shāstra (BPHS) and ancient texts based on or akin to BPHS are to be relied upon, because that is the accepted meaning of Vedic Astrology or Jyotisha.

There cannot be mutually incompatible two correct techniques of timing, either both of them or at least one of them must be incorrect. As far as the first school based on physical astronomy is concerned, all possible values of ayanāmsha have been experimented with during past one hundred years, without any conclusive outcome in the favour of any single value of ayanāmsha. It proves that even after we get some perfect solution to the problem of ayanāmsha, there must be other unrecognized errors which must be removed if we want any exact technique in timing of events. One such source of error is erroneous length of the Vimshottari year. Some software developers, like Sri Jyoti Star in the USA and Kundalee in India, have experimented with various types of Vimshottari years, without any conclusive result, because a third source of error was never noticed by any practitioner of Vedic Astrology among the computer using guys : hidden Saurpakshiya offsets in Drikpakshiya longitudes of planets. Most of the computer using astrologers might not have heard these esoteric terms, whiich are fundamental in the curriculum of Vedic Jyotisha taught in Sanskrit universities of India. These are ancient concepts, and Ketaki system had revived these concepts during 20th century. Kamlakara Bhatta was the most staunch proponent of this Saurpakshiya mathematics during recent centuries, but due to Western hegemony and faith in modern science this ancient system was never tried by any software developer.

Many reputed scholars of Sanskrit universities on India have concluded that unless this beejsamskrita (offset corrected) method of Suryasidhanta is adopted, foolproof timing of events will remain a distant dream. On 18 Oct 2005, after two days of discussions in a conference held at Sampoornanand Sanskrit University in Varanasi, an unanimous decision was taken by academic stalwarts from six states of India that all panchangas of India ought to be made according to Suryasidhanta and a committee headed by me (Vinay Jha) was formed to implement this unanimous decision, whose parties were Dr Nagendra Pandey (currently HOD of Jyotisha at Sampoornanand Sanskrit University in Varanasi), Dr Shukdeva Chaturvedi (former HOD of Lalbahadur Shastri Kendriya Vidyapeetha in Delhi), Dr Ramchandra Pandey (former HOD of Jyotisha of Benaras Hindu University, Varanasi), Dr Radhakanta Mishra (currently HOD of Jyotisha at KSD Sanskrit University in Bihar), etc. This unanimous decision was implemented and eight panchangas were started in many states of India and a horoscope making Kundalee software was also launched, based on the same beejsamskrita Suryasidhantic mathematics.

Mathematical discussion of this tricky affair is not advisable here. My aim here is merely to illustrate, with some examples, this traditional method of Vedic Ganita (mathematics), which was simply known as Siddhanta (theory) by all ancient astrologers of India. Without a sound Siddhānta, a sound predictive astrology is just impossible. There were 18 ancient Siddhāntas, of which Surya Siddhanta was lauded as the best by Varah Mihir. The beauty and greatness of BPHS cannot be properly fathomed unless we use the Ganita (Surya Siddhanta) of those very ancient masters who created Phalita.

Some rules must be observed before we proceed. Rāshi chart should be used only for determining friendships, aspects, strengths, debilities, etc of planets. Predictive work should be entirely based upon the Bhāva-chalita kundali. Many astrologers use Rāshi kundali for predictons because it saves time, and this habit has now become almost a rule ! Ascendant is defined as a point in ecliptic. The latter is elliptical. Hence, ascendant and consequent bhāvas are all parts of this solar ellipse. Rāshi kundali is circular and therefore all 12 parts are equal. But bhāvachalita kundali is elliptical because its 12 bhāvas are unequal.

Now we come to our main theme. Birthtime bhāvachalita (D1) and navamāmsha (D9) kundalis and associated aspect charts are given in following two pictures. Let us explore the timing of marriage of a registered user (cf. http://www.mysticboard.com/viewtopic.php?t=58583&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0) according to BPHS and Laghuparashari. All the rules and techniques used below are well known to all Vedic astrologers, but these rules work with perfection only if all the three mathematical offsets are taken into account. Following analysis is based on a software (Kundalee) in which all necessary corrections proposed by aforementioned academics have been taken into account.

Birthtime : 17:07:1983 at 19:34, Nellore (14:27 N, 80:02 E)
Marriage time : 10:08:2006 at 11:04, Hyderabad

Saurpakshiya Vimshottari at the time of marriage :
MahaDasha(MD) = Jup, AD = Sat, PD = Rahu,SD = Ven,PrD = Merc
Let us consider birthtime Bhava-chalita (D1) and Navamasha(D9) charts. Following is the aspects (max. 60) on 7th house :
Jup = 51 ; Ketu = 39 ; Sat = 38 ; Moon = 10 ; Rahu = 6 ; others = 0.
Merury resides in 7th house.

Due to more aspect on 7th house than any other planet, marriage took place in Jupiter's MD.

But Ketu and Saturn have nearly equal aspect on 7th. Ketu has Yuti relation with Jupiter, but Saturn has a yuti relation with lord of the 7th house Moon.

Firstly, Jupiter's being lord of 3rd and 12th houses and being merely samagrihi in 11th house is far weaker than exalted Saturn in 9th house with lord of 7th Moon. Hence, yuti relation with Jupiter is not imparting enough weightage to Ketu in its contention with Saturn as a force to reckon with as regards 7th house.

Secondly, Jupiter is friendly to both Ketu and Saturn in bhāvachalita, but in D9 Jupiter is friendly to Saturn but enmical (tātkālika) to Ketu, the latter being further weakened by being placed in 12th house. It forced Ketu out of the race, and made Saturn factor of AD.

Moon in spite of being lord of 7th house had only 10' aspect and in D9 was debilitated in D9, hence it went out of the race. Mercury is combust (asta) with debilitated Sun, hence it was powerless. Jāyākāraka Venus is lord of 8th house, resides in 6th and has no aspect on 7th. Hence it had no effect on marriage. In bhāvachalita, all other planets are totally ineffective in this regard. In D9, exalted Saturn has yuti relation with Mercury and Rahu. Since Mercury is combust in bhāvachalita, Rahu emerges as the most powerful contender for factor behind pratyantara dashā when we consider the combined effect of bhāvachalita and D9.

Among the remaining, we find Jāyākāraka Venus as factor of SD and Mercury sitting in 7th as factor of Prāndashā, in spite of their weaknesses, because all other planets are totally ineffectve. Mercury is 10°:34':35'' degrees away from Sun (after applying Saurpakshiya offset in longitudes according to ancient canons), and is therefore not totally combust. Venus is also not too bad, and therefore its property of Jāyākāraka was not totally destroyed on account of residing in 8th and lacking aspect on 7th.

Careful comparison of all planets in D1and D9 with regard to their influences on 7th house should be made by readers to determine the five planets needed for Vimshottari timing. D1 is bhāvachalita and not Rāshi-chart, because BPHS explicitly uses the word Lagna for D1, and ancient mathematical canon (Suryasiddhānta) defines Lagna as in terms of elliptical ecliptic and not in terms of circular bha-vritta. If such precautions are taken, measure of error in determination of time of events will gradually reduce.
In the chart of husband of this native, two planets are so powerful for the 7th house that they were repeated in Vimshottari sequence Ineffectiveness of other planets also contributed to this.

This topic is growing too big. Such problems should be solved by means of comparison of both types of softwares, popular ones, and Suryasiddhāntic. It is not possible to wipe out Suryasiddhanta in spite of centuries of propaganda against it by Semitic invaders and their intellectual offsprings. Suryasiddhanta is not a text of physical astronomy, its Grahas are incarnations of gods. BPHS also holds same views. Physical planets have no power to control destinies of men and nations, and they cannot be propitiated either. If material planets are accepted to be factors in astrology, their forces must be material forces. But how can we compare the gigantic material forces of Sun and Jupiter with Mercury ? And what is the material force of Rahu or Ketu ? Injecting materialism in astrology is destroying it. Jyotisha, being Vedanga, is a part of Veda, and is a part of religion rather than of material science. Its criterion of truth is not heavenly position of material objects perceived by sense organs, but the reliability of Phalita (predictive branch of astrology). 2000 AD was the year of minimum amount of offset in longitudes between Drikpakshiya (physical) and Saurpakshiya (Suryasiddhāntic) planets. Now, this offset has begun to increase, and will reach the value of 180° in 23000 AD. When this offset was considerable, no one talked of material objects. Observatories are things of Kaliyuga. Astrological Grahas are deities who control lives of creatures.

Reading such arguments, some people start crying wolf about obscurantism. But they forget that all great scientists like Newton, Neils Bohr, Einstein and Schröedinger were believers in God, the last of them being a staunch supporter of Vedanta who got a Nobel Prize by proving through his Wave Mechanics that material things are mere perceptions and nothing exists in the universe excepting Waves (of Consciousness?) : this is what Badarayana and Shankaracharya taught!

My chief concern here is to bring to notice some little known aspects of Vimshottari and of the mathematical aspects of astrology. The purpose of this topic is not to assert that Vimshottari is enough for timing of events. There are other techniques in Vedic Astrology. But Vimshottari is by far the most important of all, and its importance has reduced due to three factors already pointed out by me : wrong ayanamsha, wrong length of Vimshottari year, and wrong or no longitudinal offsets in planetary positions.

Foolproof _ Techniques _Of _Stock _Forecasting
(These charts are interpreted according to standard techniques of Individual Horoscopy as in BPHS)

The Mesha-samkraanti (Sun's entry or transit into nirayana Mesha) horoscope at the Meridians of Mt Meru ( 37:19 E at equator) illustrated in annual rain forecasts is used in exactly same way for annual stock forecasting for all parts of the of the world, with a single difference : 2nd Bhaava is important for all regions of the world, althoiugh primary importance is given to that bhaava in which a stock exchange lies. Mesha-samkraanti chart is effective for the whole year beginning from Mesha-samkraanti.

Nakshatra-charts (horoscopes at the time of Sun's entry into nakshatras or asterisms) are drawn similarly. These charts are affective as long as Sun resides in a particulat nakshatra.

The third level of Meru kundalis is of Shashtyamsha charts, which are drawn when nirayana Sun completes half degrees in any Raashi. These charts are effective for 12 hours approximately, ie for half solar days.

Fourth level is of Ishta-kaalika charts. There are 104 such D1 charts (bhaavachalita kundalis) per day, to which one must add charts at the time of raashi changes in D1. For the working day of stock exchanges, there are approximately 24-25 D1 charts.

In addition to these charts, D9 (Navaamsha) and D2 (Horaa) charts also must be drawn for each of above levels. Final outcome depends upon the sum total of all these four levels of charts. For instance, if a Nakshatra chart of Chitra is fine in both 2008 and 2009 AD, but annual chart of 2008 is worse than that of 2009, that the Chitra chart of 2008 will produce RELATIVELY worse result in comparison to the Chitra chart of 2009. All these four levels of charts are nested within each other. Thus, it is not easy to judge the total effect. Method of evaluating the charts is same as in rain forecasting, except in the case of fourth level (Ishta-kaalika charts), in which ONLY the second bhaava is evaluated for stock forecasting, while entire kundali is evaluated for rain forecasting or judging the muhurta.

CASE STUDY : Bombay Stock Exchange ( BSE ) SENSEX-Forecasts

EXAMPLE-1 :

Sun's entry into 435th Araa of Dirghatamasa (out of 720 Araas or half-degrees comprising a solar year, cf. RgVeda-i-164) on Nov 20, 2009, 7:30:09 IST at Mt Meru :

Explanation of above chart :

Almost the whole of India lies in 8th house lorded by Venus which is Svagrihi (in own sign or Raashi) in lagna (ascendant). In D1, Venus is strong due to its residence in its own sign tulaa in lagna. If lagnesh is ashtamesha, then the malefic character of Ashtamesha is washed away. But India lies in the bad house 8th, which neutralizes the boon of svagrihi Venus, and the net result is almost neutral. In D9 too, Venus is almost neutral : strong by dint of residing in 4th house, but weak due to lying in enemy's sign and lording bad houses 3rd and 8th. In d2 too, it is in sun's Horaa which is not good for wealth. Therefore, SENSEX dipped slightly on 24th Nov, 2009, shown in the following picture which shows indices during 19-27 Nov, 2009. In this picture, we see three curves : green is for automobile industries, blue is for BSE-500 and red-black is for metal (mainly steel) companies. In the middle of these curves, we see green line going up and other two going down : this portion of the curve is for 24th Nov. Blue line is for BSE-500 companies, which shows a small dip downward. It corroborates the chart analysis shown above.

Metal (mainly steel) companies show a greater downward movement on that day, because Saturn which governs steel was in 12th house in D1 and in Solar Horaa. But good Saturn in D9 prevented a too drastic fall. D9 can overpower D1 if a planet is exalted in D9 and not exalted in D1, which is not the case here. Hence, the goodness of Saturn only mitigated the gravity of situation to some extent.

Automobile industry is watched from 4th house of D1 and from entire D16 chart. Saturn is the lord of D16 which is the best planet of whole D16 and is sitting in 4th house in fast friend's sign and is lord of D16 (ie, lagnesh of D16) as well as lord of 2nd house of wealth of auto companies. Neecha Mars (lord of 11th) in 2nd house is creating a Vipareeta Rajayoga. A stronger Vipareeta Rajayoga is generated by Jupiter in 6th which is conjunct-relative of lord of India Venus and is most potent planet for India on that day. Other planets are bad but do not affect the fortunes much. Thus, in spite of bad D1 from the point of view of auto industry, strong D16 for India caused a healthy rise in auto indices. Neecha Jupiter in 4th house in D1 was ineffective and Saturn had only 25' aspect on 4th house in D1, which allowed D16 to overpower D1.

This forecast was a crude summary. The details are as follows :

India falls in 9th and 10th Bhaavas in the above Merucentric D1 (Bhaava-chalita) chart. Venus is lord of 2nd and 9th houses, with zero aspect on 2nd and 55' (92%) on 9th house. Hence, 9th house is highly auspicious. Sun and Mercury are conjuncts with Venus, but they will exert less influence due to strength of Venus as lord. Mars will also be influential because Sun and Moon are in its Raashi and are aspected by it (Bhaavesh-drishti relation), and due to Vipareeta Rajayoga of Mars. But Mars is malefic due to lordship of bad houses. So is Sun. Mercury is in the influence of malefic Sun due to combustion. Sun is highly malefic in D2 (Horaa) and D9 (navaamsha chart) and so is Mars in D9. Therefore, the benefic influence of Venus on 9th house is somewhat mitigated by the malefic aspects of Sun and Mars. Sun itself is in 75% control of Mars due to 45' Bhaavesh-drishti (lord's aspect).

But 9th house covers only half of India. Northern half lies in 10th house. 10th house is lorded by Mercury which is combust in sun and is in the Raashi of its enemy Mars. Sun and Mars are malefic as noted above. 10th house does not get the benefit of Venus as 9th house does. Thus, half of India is in a melefic house, and the other half is in a slightly benefic house.

On the whole, Anuradha has benefic properties on account of Venus and malefic properties due to Mars ans Sun, Venus being more powerful in 9th and Mars for 10th house. As for 9th house, Venus leads one to project a rosy picture for 13.3 days since Nov 20, but we must take into account 10th house too which is not good and covers half of India. Moreover, Sarvatobhadra Chakra lends following conclusions :

India (letter Bhaa in Bhaarata) is Viddha b y four planets : Sun, Jupiter, Rahu, Moon) . Dubai, Mumbai, Shanghai are Viddha by 3 and Tokyo HK by only 2 planets. These countries and stock exchanges were Viddha in same order. Viddha Tithis were : 4, 9, 14 by Mars and Rahu ; 2, 7, 12 by Moon and Ketu ; 1, 6, 11 by Mars alone ; and 5, 10, 15 by Sun alone. Mars being most malefic and influential followed by Sun, we can guess 4, 9, 14 to be worst tithis followed by 5, 10, 15.

These are only possibilities. Actual event should be fine tuned by means of Merucentric Shashtyamsha Charts, ie charts drawn from Meru at those moments when nirayana Sun completes each half degree in any raashi. Following is the Merucentric Shashtyamsha Chart for the morning of 26th Nov when stock markets crashed during the following half-day :
Such charts are effective for approximately 12 hours. Till gthe morning of 26th Nov 2009, Venus remained in its own Raashi and half or more than half of India (and regions from Dubai to Tokya) remained in the houses lorded by Venus. But in the Merucentric Shashtyamsha Chart of 26th Nov morning when Sun reached 9.5 degrees in Vrishchika, Venus became combust in 2nd house of wealth in Sun which was malefic in all relevant charts : D1 , D2 and D9 and venus was malefic in D2 and D9, but in its own raashi in D1. The worst planet was Moon which was in 6th house in both D1 and D9 and in malefic Sun-horaa in D2 : Bhaarata, Dubai, Shanghai, Hong Kong were Viddha by Moon. Ketu was also highly malefic in D1, D2 , D9, and Mumbai, Dubai, Shanghai, Honk kong were viddha by it. Tithi was also 9, which was among the most malefic Tithis during Anuradha.

Following is the Sarvatobhadra Vedha list for Anuradha Chart mentioned above :

The last level is of Ishta-kaalika Charts which number approximately 25 during the working hours of stock exchanges. Unlike the Merucentric charts, these Ishta-kaalika Charts are made from the meridians of the stock exchange in question. In these Ishta-kaalika Charts, entire chart need not be evaluated and only the fate of 2nd house decides the fortunes of major stock exchanges which crudely reflect the wealth of nations. In Merucentric charts too, entire charts need never be evaluated and only those houses are evaluated which contain the nation in question. Combined effect of D1, D2 and D9 should be taken. Only Suryasiddhantic mathematics gives accurate results.

Foolproof _ Techniques _Of _Long-range _Rain _Forecasting

Introduction : Modern science has no foolproof technique of weather forecasting. There are two categories of scientific methods currently being used : one is statistical, lacking any sound theory and guided by a set of pressure and temperature parameters of selected places and correlating them to past rainfall patterns ; the other is based on dynamic weather simulation. Ironically, it is the statistical method which gives better results, but parameters have to be overhauled after few years, and it has been found that in ~60 years only less than half of the predictions can be said to be approximately reliable. Hence, in modern science, weather forecasting is little more than guesswork, because in tossing of coin also you may get 50% heads and 50% tails.

There are many ancient techniques (not currently used) of weather forecasting in Vedic Astrology. During past millenium, most of these techniques went into disuse due to lack of state patronage. Another reason was deliberate secrecy due to threats to one's own state, as a result of which many of these techniques were lost or forgotten. Many new short cut methods were devised during the mediaeval age, some of which had neither any theoretical justification nor any connection with siddhanta or samhitaa and have been proven to be no more reliable than in 50-60% cases.

Here, the most important and easiest of all the ancient techniques is being elaborated with examples. Horoscope of the world cast at the juncture of Sun's entry into nirayana Mesha raashi helps in annual prediction for the world, which is being explained here merely with reference to annual rainfall, although these annual horoscopes can be used for predicting other events too. Exactly same method can be used to make horoscopes at the time of solar transits into asterisms (Nakshatras), which will be valid for the period till Sun resides in that Nakshatra.

All these horoscopes should be made from the place where the World was born (according to traditional view), like the birthplace of individual used for making individual horoscope. According to Vedic-Purānic-Epic-Suryasiddhāntic tradition, this Creation was created by Lord Brahmā from atop Mt Meru. Hence, world's horoscope should be made from Mt Meru. According to Suryasiddhanta, "Mt Meru lies in the jewel-rich region of Jambūnada at the middle of Earth". Narapatijayacharyaa, a mediaeval work based on ancient Yāmala tantras, also says Meru is in middle of Earth and "India is east from Meru" (भरतेषु च विख्यातो पूर्वदिङ्-मेरुतः स्थितः...नवखण्डमिदं प्रोक्तं कथितं च आदियामले।।cf. Padmachakra, 7।।; this citation in Narapatijayacharyā is from Ādi-Yāmala Tantra ). That mountain has been renamed as Mt Kenya by moderners, where a town named Meru still sits. Its latitude is zero and longitude is 37:19 east of Greenwich. This location of Meru can be tested astrologically as shown below,instead of wasting time in argumentation. World's horoscopes made from Mt Meru has been found to be in perfect harmony with all available official data about rainfall, economic growth, major wars, famines, major storms, major earthquakes, etc, without a single exception ! For instance, 136 years' annual rainfall data of IMD (Indian Meteorological Dept) arranged by scientists of IITM (Indian Institute of tropical Meteorology, Pune) was checked and the result was always perfectly in tune with astrological results. Look at bottom of this page for these official data about rainfall and their sources. Standard methods of BPHS (Brihat Parashara Horaa Shaastra) are used to analyze mesha pravesha bhaava-chaliota charts made from Mt Meru (Mt Kenya). This method is very simple, but Ganita must be Suryasiddhantic for 100% accurate results. If physical astronomy is used, we get mixed results, sometimes right and sometimes wrong. Here, 100% accuracy means absence of a single false result, but some persons guess that the talk of 100% accuracy means 100% accuracy in absolute quantity of rainfall, which is impossible for any mortal. Astrologers say you are going to have good earning during so and so period ;is any astrologer capable of predicting how much money you will get ? Evaluate what is offered here, and do not pose impossible questions which only God can answer.

IITM data at its website was arranged in terms of Gregorian calendar beginning with January. For comparison with Mesha-pravesha kundalis, this data was converted by me into year beginning with April. Mesh samkrānti occurs around mid-April, but negligible rainfall takes place in first half of April as compared to total annual rainfall, hence such a dataset was comparable to Mesha-pravesha kundalis from Meru. Another point which must not be overlooked is that we must follow the ancient Suryasiddhāntic mathematics with updated bīja-samskāras according to ancient principles. Here, the results are being presented, which were categorized into three categories : above normal rainfall (>+10% of normal, ie >110%) with 20 instances, normal rainfall (+10 to -10% of normal, ie, 110-90%) with 93 instances, and below normal rainfall (less than -10% or 90% of normal rainfall) with 22 instances. Here, 10 best and 10 worst rainfall years are being presented together with their astrological analyses. Aspects are given in the conventional scaling with 60' as full aspect.

JHorā software can be used for Drig-pakshiya computations (ie, based on physical astronomy). JHora uses astronomical database supplied by Swiss Ephemeris, the latter being based on NASA's JPL datasets, which are most reliable data of modern physical astronomy. A simplified software of Swiss Ephemeris can be freely downloaded by anyone, which shows half a minute errors. Hence JHora is reliable as far as physical planetary positions are concerned. But I use real Bhāvachalita based on Dasham computation which JHora lacks (no offence intended, I make predictions from actual Bhāvachalita and not from the Rāshi chart assumed to be same as Bhāva chart for time saving). Whenevr needed, Bhāvachalita computations are given from another software.

For Saura-pakshiya computations (ie, Suryasiddhāntic) , I use my special mundane software whose formulae were same as used in Suryasiddhāntic Kundalee software. This method has been verified by Jyotisha Department of KSD Sanskrit University after much debate, and many other institutions are publishing panchangas from software based on these formulae, predictions from this software have been verified by many top scientists too.

Drig-pakshiya and Saura-pakshiya computations show minor differences in individual horoscopes, but in mundane charts they show large difference in Lagna due to the fact that a quarter degree difference in position of Sun results into 6 hours' difference in time of solar transit (Samkrānti, here Mesha samkrānti at whose time annual charts are made) which means a difference of about three rāshis in all bhāvas including Lagna, which makes comparison easy. Hence, whether Saurapaksha or Drikpaksha is best suited for astrology should be decided by means of comparison of mundane charts at the time of solar transits.

Centre of the Rāshi Chakra is at Mt Meru (Mt Kenya), and middle point of Mesha is always towards the east. Hence, almost the whole of India lies in the Vrish rāshi with Venus as Lord, excluding most of J&K which lies in Mithuna and a small region around Kanyākumārī which lies in Mesha. There are seven types of Kūrma Chakra (KC) which is called Mahā-chakra in Ādi-Yāmala Tantra : Prithvi KC (shown as Padma Chakra in Narapatijayacharyā), Desha KC (which is wrongly called Prithvi Chakra in Narapatijayacharyā)), Pradesha KC (which is described under Desha KC in Narapatijayacharyā), Nagara KC for town, Grāma KC for village, Kshetra KC for plot of land, and Griha KC.

Instead of using Kūrma Chakras here, fixed Rāshi Chakra with movable Bhāvachalita is used here in Prithvi Chakra mode (called as Padma Chakra in Narapatijayacharyā) with centre at Mt Meru. Same basic design can be easily modified to make all other Medini chakras of ancient Yāmala tantras for making world forecasts. Desha chakra for Bhārata will be presented elsewhere at this site.

Rāshis are always fixed, shown with black dotted lines in the maps below, but Lagna changes with respect to time of Mesha Samkrānti. Hence, the 12 bhaavas of bhāvachalita move with Lagna as first bhāva ; due to this movability bhāva-chakra is known as bhāva-chalita (shown in coloured dotted lines in the maps below) . Although most of India lies in Vrish, sometimes large portions of South India may be lorded by Mars due to mid-point of its bhāva falling often in Mesha. Similarly, portions of NW India may often be lorded by Mercury. There are some exceptional cases when a planet fails to be lord of a bhāva which it owns in rāshi chart due to the fact that the middle of that bhāva falls in another rāshi not owned by that planet. For instance, if starting point of Kanyā is after mid-point of a particular bhāva, and end point of Kanyā ends before the middle of next bhāva, then none of these two bhāvas will be lorded by the lord of Kanyā, ie, by Mercury. BPHS (Brihat Parāshara Horā Shāstra) gives both types of bhāva charts, accurate bhāva-chalita as well as crude bhāva-chakra assumed to be same as rāshi-chakra for time saving. Some astrologers use rāshi-chakra for making bhāva-phala. This practice gives wrong results, which is proven by following study.

Only Suryasiddhantic bhaavachalita chart is shown on map, but even Drikpakshiya (based on physical astronomy) bhaavachalita chart can be easily visualized on same map by mentally rotating the bhaavachalita chart : anticlockwise if Drikpakshiya Lagna (ascendant) is more in value than Suryasiddhantic Lagna, and clockwise if less. Magnitude of this rotation should be equal to the difference in Lagnas.

Many complexities of phalita jyotisha are clarified by following studies. Most important of all, it helps us in valorization of the overall result of horoscope : we can correlate quatitative magnitude of rainfall with horoscopic conditions, and use this experience in evaluating individual horoscopes quantitavily. It is the most difficult part of phalita jyotisha, never perfected by anyone. If it is perfected, we will be able to predict the quantity of predicted results. Quantitative studies of rainfall or national economic growth helps us in this regard.

Table - 2 on next page consists of ten worst rainfall years in recorded history, which is followed by some discussion on special topics needed closer scrutiny. We can provide all official data and all Saurapakshiya Mesha samkrānti horoscopes of all remaining 116 years of annual data at this website, if requested by serious researchers. (A) Suryasiddhāntic computation : Mesha samkrānti at Meru (37º:19' E ; 0º:0' N) was at 9:07:07 AM IST, 13 Apr 1956 (one may test it in free Kundalee Software). More than half of India including entire North lies in Bhāva-3 (shown by azure or light blue arc of the bhāvachalita circle towards India) whose lord Venus resides there (svagrihi, shown in orange, superimposed by Ketu in black colour in the map). Its relatives are all ominous : debilitated (nīcha) Ketu and Rāhu, and Saturn in 8th house having aspect of 45 in north India and 60 (full) in south India falling in 3rd house. Bad planets with good aspects or residence in a house give destructive rains (called Dushta-vrishti in Vedic mundane astrology). Saturn in 8th is deadly, causing deaths with rains, but svagrihi Venus is the saviour. Places pierced (viddha) in Satvatobhadra Chakra by Saturn (places beginning with letters m,t-retroflex,p,r,t, vowel- uu) should have destructive rains, and places pierced by Venus (vowel - u) will have overall good results. Venus in Vāyu-naadi and Saturn in Chandā-nādi give high winds. Due to svagrihi Venus, middle of 3rd house will have best rains, ie in NW India. Nodes have less effect on rains if any real planet is effective and strong, as is svagrihi venus here.

Peninsular India is in 2nd house (shown by light red arc of bhāvachalita circle) of Mars which is exalted but has only a 19' aspect on northern border of 2nd Bhāva shown by light red curved line running through Mahārāshtra - WB- Nāgāland ; and 35' in southernmost India. But Mars:Saturn have a mutual ownership (parivartana) relation, as a result of which Saturn is influential for this house esp of South in Deccan with full aspect, but exalted Mars attenuates the deadly effects of Saturn sitting in 8th. This house witnessed less rains than 3rd house due to svagrihi lord in the 3rd house in comparison to less than half aspect of Mars on its 2nd House (see official data in the extreme left side column : Peninsular India received +16% excess rains, while NW India received +48% excess rains).

(B) On the basis of modern physical astronomy, mesha samkrānti at Meru was at 10:23:59 AM IST or 7:23:59 Kenyā Time, 13 Apr 1956 , with Lagna at 21º:23':23" in Mesha (by JHora), India falls in 2nd bhāva (2nd bhāva extends from Vrish 5º:34':19" to 3º:36':06" in Mithuna) and Venus in Vrish at 15º:41':33", svagrihi Venus is good for rains in India although being deadly (mārkesha). But middle of 2nd Bhāva containing bulk of India, excepting TN and Kerala, lies around 19º:45':10" in Vrish (curve joining Surat-Lucknow-Kāthmandu), while in Saur kundali we had middle of bhāva (3rd) at NW extremes of India near end of Vrish. According to Drig kundali, maximum rainfall should occur along the line of 19º:45':10" which runs through Surat-Lucknow-Kāthmandu because middle of bhāva was there. This region had good rains, but not maximum. Data show that maximum rains occurred at NW extreme (see the official data in the extreme left side column). Hence, Saur kundali is better for this year as far as rains are concerned. Other combinations important for India, like Saturn and Rāhu in 8th, and Ketu with Venus are the same for Saur and Drig kundalis.

In individual kundalis, difference between Saura and Drig kundalis is not great now-a-days, within a few degrees for planets, but in mundane charts of transits into raashis or nakshatras exhibit a great difference in lagna due to many hours of difference in time of transit (samkrānti). Here, we find Dring lagna at 21º:23':23" , and Saur lagna at 0º:0':52", both in Mesha ! Due to such large differences, we find considerable differences in mundane horoscopes, which makes comparison easier. When we compare a number of such mundane horoscopes, evidences tilt in favour of Saura in 100% cases.

The main picture containing world map and horoscope on it with accompanying details is the screenshot of a mundane Suryasiddhāntic software whose calculations are same as that of Kundalee software. On right side top is Rāshi chart of JHora software by PVR Narasimha Rao. On left top is output from another software based upon physical astronomy, whose computations show negligible differences from JHora.

(A) Suryasiddhāntic computation : Mesha samkrānti at Meru (37:19 E ; 0:0 N) was at 6:55:32 AM IST, 13 Apr 1917 (test it in free
Kundalee Software). Excepting Deccan which is in 3rd House, most of India is in 4th House (green arc) lorded by exalted Venus combust in exalted Sun lying in 2nd House with combust Mars, the latter having parivartana relation with Jupiter in 3rd House.

Excepting Saturn and Rahu, which have neglible aspect on those portions of India which are in 4th house, all planets have higher aspects towards NW India. Due to influence of two exalted planets, exalted lord Venus with exalted Sun, there was record rainfall in NW (+95%). Moreover, NW India also lied in middle of 4th Bhāva.

Aspect of 14 by exalted sun and 16 by exalted Venus caused +95% rains in NW, but their aspect of 5-6 towards southern bhāva sandhi of 4th Bhaava caused only +20% (in West Central) and +14%(central NE) India. It is very difficult to make quantitative scales on account of few years' data, but analysis of a long period may make us wiser.

South India was in 3rd Bhāva, whose lord Mars was in full control of 3rd House in spite of zero aspect due to parivartana yoga with Jupiter. Mars was samgrihi but combust with exalted Sun, which helped it to cause +10% rains in South.

(B) Drikpakshiya computation (JHORA) : Mesha samkrānti at Meru (37:19 E ; 0:0 N) was at 11:04:13 AM IST or 8:04:13 Kenyā Time, 13 Apr 1917, with Lagna Mesha 23º:57':15" (Saura lagna was Kumbha 24º:55':39"), a difference of 59º:01':36" in Lagna. Most of India north of 8º in Vrish was in 2nd Bhāva with its lord in 12th, where lord of southern 2 states Mars was also languishing. Sun was in Lagna, hence benefit of conjunction with exalted Sun was denied. Exalted Venus in 12th was not able to give record +95% rains, and Mars with enemy Venus was much worse off. This time, Drikpakshiya chart is failing miserably.

Venus is present near the end of this bhāva towards NW India, and remaining bulk of NW India was lorded by Mercury which was combust in exalted Sun residing in 8th house. Thus exalted Sun influenced NW India, while parts of NW India (SW Rājasthan) were influenced by svagrihi Venus, which resulted in excessive rains in NW (+42%). It was assisted by high aspect (48 - 54) of Saturn on NW, which had an aspect relation with Mars which was lord of house in which Mercury and Sun resided. another influential planet, with less strength on NW, was Jupiter having 22 - 29 aspect on NW. Saturn was in Neerā Nādi, and Jupiter in Saumya Nādi. Other planets had negligible aspects on NW India. West Central India also got +33& rains due to proximity of this region to Venus in bhāva sandhi. Rest of India got little more than normal rains. Lord of NW in 8th house with exalted Sun meant destructive rains, while most of India in 9th house meant beneficial rains.

(B) Drikpakshiya computation (JHORA) : Mesha samkrānti at Meru (37:19 E ; 0:0 N) was on 12 Apr 1892 at 01:09:50 AM IST , or 11 Apr 1892 at 22:09:50 Kenyā Time, with Lagna Vrishchika 24º:03':06" (Saura Lagna was Kanyā 7º:25':57"). There was a difference of over 76.6 degrees in Lagna, as a result of which India was in 7th house with Bhāva's centre at 24º degrees in Vrish, which implies heaviest rains along Gujarāt - Western Nepāl curve, which was not much away from actual heavy rainfall zone in NW. Two southern states were in 6th house where exalted Sun was residing, and lord of this house Mercury sitting in 2nd bhaava ; it should give destructively excssive rains which was not the case. Physical astronomy fails this year.

Both Venus and Sun are exalted and having yuti relation. But their aspect on 11th house is effective only towards the north, hence other planets with good aspects on 11th house, esp on its southern portion, also become effective. Mars has no aspect on any part of India, and nodes may be neglected because many other planets are effective (nodes become effective in rain prediction only when other planets are ineffective on a particular bhāva). Hence, six planets are effective, and computing their total effect is a formidable task. A shortcut crude method is outlined here.

At bottom in left is the aspect table. Lord of 11th house Venus and two other conjuncts Moon and Mercury are in rāshi owned by Jupiter, and Jupiter has maximum aspect on 11th house as well. Moreover, Jupiter and its conjunct Saturn are in Amrita and Neerā nādis respectively, while Venus & Mercury are in Dahnā nādi, Moon in Saumya and Sun in Vāyu nādi (according to Sapta-nādi chakra which is important for rain forecasting). All these factors make Jupiter the most powerful rain maker for India this year, in spite of its debility (which is recompensed by yuti with svagrihi Saturn). To jupiter's influence, we must add that of its conjunct Saturn too. Adding aspects of Jupiter and Saturn on 11th house, we get aspects 30, 75 and 85 respectively on north, middle and south India respectively. But exalted planets Venus and Sun have a combined aspect of 42 on the north, 21 on the middle and 6 on the south. Although these exalted planets are in Dahnā and Vāyu nādis, lordship of 11th house by Venus and exaltation of both these planets

make them highly influential in proportion to aspects. Mercury being both combust and debilitated and lord of 3rd and 12th houses may be neglected, but Moon being Lagnesh and in friendly rāshi of Jupiter should not be neglected, although its aspect should be reduced in weight in relation to those of exalted Venus and Sun. If we reduce the strength of Moon's aspect to half in comparison with exalted planets, we get a final aspect of all four planets in yuti with Venus.as 61, 33 and 12 on north, middle and south India respectively. Increase these figures slightly, say 20%, due to more weightage of exalted planets, to get 73, 40 and 14, and then add these to those of Jupiter and Saturn (30, 75 and 85), we get 103, 115 and 99 on north, middle and south India respectively. It tallies well with actual rainfall data : +28% in NW, +35% and +16%(Central NE or CNE) in middle, and +21% in south. Many parts of Central NE should be counted in north. Only a rough approximation has been attempted, actual valorization of planetary influences for enabling us to predict exact quatity of rainfall is not possible unless we make a large database for easy referencing, which we do not possess and therefore are forced to work on guesswork. But such a database can be prepared with time, which will help in prediction by meand of referencing to similar planetary conditions in the database.

(B) Drikpakshiya computation (JHORA) : Mesha samkrānti at Meru (37:19 E ; 0:0 N) was on 13 Apr 1961 at 17:45:26 AM IST , or 13 Apr 1961 at 14:45:26 Kenyā Time, with Lagna Karka 29º:26':02" (Saura Lagna was Karka 13º:09':09"). There was a difference of over 16º degrees in Lagna, as a result of which 11th bhāva will not coincide with almost whole of India : northern half will fall in 11th and southern half in 10th house. JHORA software does not show real Bhāvachalita chart. JHORA shows Lagna at Karka 29º:26':02" , which means 11th bhaava's middle should be near the end of Vrish and 10th bhaava's middle should be near the end of Mesha. Thus, 10th bhāva's start must be around the middle of Mesha and Sun must be in 9th bhāva and not in 10th bhāva. Therefore, JHORA software shows only rāshi chart, and bhāvachalita chart is never shown. Rāshi chart is used only for mathematical works like exaltation, friendships, aspects, etc, while all predictions are to be made from bhāvachalita, but many astrologers use rāshi chart for predictive works as well, and never consult bhāvachalita. Here, Sun being in 9th bhāva has no aspect on south India lying in 10th bhāva and therefore good rains could not be expected in south India, esp in relation to nort where exalted Venus and other related planets had good aspects. Moreover, lord of 10th house Mars was in 12th, suggesting a drought. Hence, physical astonomy fails misrably in this case, while Suryasiddhānta explains data admirably, as in all other years.

Here again a debilitated Mercury having yuti relation with exalted Venus gets the strength of Venus, as in the case with Jupiter in 1961 AD seen above. Due to relatively higher aspect of Mercury on its regions in NW India, from 32' to 27', NW India got highest amount of rainfall, while rest of India experience relatively less due to low aspect or its lord Venus : 19 in north and only 1' in south. Its closest relative Saturn, however, contributed to rains throughout all parts due to its aspect 43 in north, 31 in middle and 39 in south. Excepting the ineffective Moon, all planets had higher aspect in north, which resulted in high incidence of rains in the north. Enmical Mars in bhāva sandhi must have have caused troubles in those regions.

(B) Drikpakshiya computation (JHORA) : Mesha Samkrānti at Meru (37:19 E ; 0:0 N) was on 12 Apr 1893 at 7:22:03 AM IST , or 12 Apr 1961 at 4:33:03 Kenyā Time, with Lagna Kumbha 24º:54':55" (Saura Lagna was Dhanu10º:28':38"). There was a difference of over 74º degrees in Lagna, as a result of which most of india was in 4th bhāva which extended from 10 degrees of Vrish (around Goā-Hyderābād curve) to 10 degrees of Mithuna (Afghānistan) , south fell in 3rd house containing Jupiter in its beginning. Venus is exalted, but has low aspect , while its closest aspect relative Saturn laguished in 8th house and could not help much. Debilitated Mercury may send good results to its houses due to yuti relation with exalted Venus, but was ineffective in doing anything good for the houses of Venus due to its debilitation. Venus was the on its own was somewhat effective in north having aspect 19'. Mars as lord of 3rd and 10th houses could make normal rains, but its two relatives Moon as lord of 6th sitting in Lagna and Saturn sitting in 8th houses and lording 12th and Lagna houses both having good aspects on India could give only destructive rains. These Drikpakshiya conditions do not support data : a +17% to +22% rains in central regions where Mars was situated, at most normal and uneven rains could be expected because Mars was samgrihi only. The JHORA chart is actually rāshi chart and not real Bhāvachalita and should be used with caution.

Svagrihi Venus in its own house 7th was auspicious for entire bhāva. It had no relatives, hence other planets were not effective. 6th bhāva contains TN, Kerala and some adjoining districts of India, whose lord Mars was debilitated but sitting in Karka with svagrihi Moon in auspicious 9th bhāva.

Here again, we find a debilitated planet having conjunction (yuti) relation with a strongly benefic planet proving auspicious for its owned bhāva : south India had same amount of rainfall as the rest of India. Hence, what svagrihi Venus did for its own bhāva was done by a debilitated Mars in yuti with a svagrihi Moon in 9th. Effect of relations are clearly shown by actual events.

(B) Drikpakshiya computation (JHORA) : Mesha Samkrānti at Meru (37:19 E ; 0:0 N) was on 13 Apr 1916 at 4:47:15 AM IST , or 13 Apr 1916 at 1:47:15 Kenyā Time, with Lagna Makara 14º:49':40" (Saura Lagna was Vrishchika 24º:08':27"). There was a difference of over 50º:41':13" in Lagna, as a result of which mid point of 5th bhāva fell 3º north of middle of India where svagrihi Venus was sitting auspiciously. Almost whole of India fell in 5th bhāva. In the case of 5th bhāva, both Saurapakshiya and Drikpakshiya computations give equally good results, but Drikpakshiya chart suggests a higher rainfall in TN and Kerala than attested by data due to kendra (4th) bhāva whose lord was with svagrihi Moon in 7th ; in Saurapaksha TN and Kerala fall in 6th house but its lord was with svagrihi Moon in 9th which saved the situation by giving a slightly more than moderate rains. Map on left shows TN and Kerala in green, which is for 0-10% rains : actual data show +7.16% for TN and +5.37% for Kerala, while the whole Peninsular India got +16.8% (Karnataka and Andhra got +35% to +45%). Physical astronomy fails to explain moderate rains in TN and Kerala, while Suryasiddnatic computations put TN and Kerala in 6th bhāva due to which benefic effects of conjunction of lord Mars with svagrihi Moon is reduced. Mars is debilitated, hence, only the effect of its strong conjunct relative Moon is effective.

The map above shows bigger circles for larger regions and smaller circles for smaller regions ; these circles are coloured according to the relative amount of annual rainfall as shown at bottom of this map.

Presently, we are discussing Prithvi Chakra of Ādi Yāmala Tantra with Mt Meru as centre. When we cast annual horoscopes from ancient India's geographical centre at Vidishā, we will get more detailed regional break up of rainfall projections. This Vidishā-centered Desha Chakra is shown in this map (which also shows Merucentic meridians as red and blue dotted lines : red lines indicate boundaries of Vrish rāshi), but we will discuss that chakra in another article. Besides these two chakras, there are five lower level chakras we have not scientifically analyzed as yet :
3. Pradesha, 4. Nagara, 5.Grāma, 6.Kshetra (plot), 7.Griha.

Slight modifications in these raashi chakras give rise to seven types of Koorma Chakras, which are not our concern at present. In Desha-Chakra above, sizes of coloured circles are proportional to the areas of meteorological subdivisions defined by Indian Meteorological Dept (IMD), and colour indicates relative rainfall.

Sun (and Venus) had a higher aspect on north which resulted in +45% rainfall in NW INdia : Sun's aspect was 15 and of Venus 16.

Debilitated Mercury with these exalted planets could be good for its own houses but not for the house of Venus. Houses in complete control of exalted planets have more than normal rainfall even in regions where aspect is negligible, due to strong influence of exalted planets.
The small region in south lorded by Mars had samgrihi Mars with samgrihi Jupiter, but Mars had mutual ownership (sthāna parivartana) relation with exalted Sun, hence 5th house was in complete control of Sun and had excellent rains.

(B) Drikpakshiya computation (JHORA) : Mesha Samkrānti at Meru (37:19 E ; 0:0 N) was on 13 Apr 1933 at 13:29:48 AM IST , or 13 Apr 1933 at 10:29:48 Kenyā Time, with Lagna Vrish 28º:37':35" (Saura Lagna was Mesha 19º:21':08"). There was a difference of over 39º degrees in Lagna, as a result of which northern regions of India above 14º degrees in Vrish were in Lagna and rest parts were in 12th house. Lagna contained no planet and was therefore influenced only by Lagnesh Venus exalted in 11th house. Mercury was in 10th bhāva and Sun was in 11th bhāva with Venus. Venus caused good rains in north. Southern half of India was lorded by Mars which had parivartana relation with Sun. But Sun had no aspect on a house adjacent to it. Mars had 12' on central and 21' on southern India, but actually southern India got less rains than central India which is clear from the detailed map prepared from official data on a sub-regional level obtained from IITM (Indian Institute of tropical Meteorology,Pune) shown on left, which proves that Drikpakshiya kundali (based on physical astronomy) gives wrong prediction of a higher rains in south.

This year's Saurapakshiya Prithvi-Chakra (ie, Meru Kundali) is a beautiful example of rules of phalita, esp of relations. Lord of 3rd house is Venus, languishing as samgrihi in 12th house, which has a mutual lordship (sthāna parivartana relation) with exalted Saturn sitting in 8th. As a result, houses of Saturn are in control of Venus, and houses of Venus are in control of Saturn (parivartana means exchange). In addition, Saturn has a full aspect relation of 60':60' with exalted Sun. Hence, Sun also influences houses controlled by Saturn. Full aspect relation means full influence. Sun is a bitter enemy of Saturn, and an enemy of Venus (enmities and friendships are shown in the aspect table in right bottom of the picture). Sun is more powerful than Saturn, because the latter is in 8th. Therefore, exalted Sun is most influence for 3rd house, whose influence is much heavier than that of Jupiter in 3rd house because Jupiter is in bitter enemy's house and is therefore weak. Moreover, Jupiter is bitter enemy of Venus and enemy of Saturn, while the latter two are enemy of Jupiter, hence Jupiter and the rest two neutralize each other, while Sun and Jupiter are fast friend of each other. Hence, Saturn and Venus could not affect south India, while in north and middle Sun and Jupiter reinforced each other. Exalted Sun has 15 aspect on northern part of 3rd house, ie NW India, and zero on South. Hence, NW India had excellent rains (+45%), while south had -10%. Saturn's influence was suppressed by Sun due to exalted Saturn's weakening in 8th house. Saturn had 30' on north and 45' on south : had Saturn been effective, south would have got more rains. Venus and Jupiter were more influential for middle and not north. Hence, actual data show that Sun was most effective. Sun's bitter enmity with Saturn and Venus caused less than normal rains in south where Sun had zero aspect. Half aspect relations of Moon and Mars were ineffective with respect to full aspect relation of Sun.

(B) Drikpakshiya computation (JHORA) : Mesha Samkrānti at Meru (37:19 E ; 0:0 N) was on 12 Apr 1894 at 13:30:57 AM IST , or 12 Apr 1894 at 10:30:57 Kenyā Time, with Lagna Vrish 28º:55':52" (Saura Lagna was Mina 13º:46':50"). There was a difference of over 45º degrees in Lagna, as a result of which Lagna-bhāva extended fron Vrish 14º to Mithuna 14º degrees in actual bhāvachalita (not shown by JHORA). Hence, northern half of India fell in Lagna and southern half fell in 12th house. Venus was samgrihi in 10th house of Saturn, and Saturn was not exalted. Jupiter was in Lagna, but in bitter enemy's house. These factors do not explain +45% rains in NW or +25% in central NE (UP, Bihar). Similarly, southern India was in 12th house where exalted Sun was sitting. Moreover, its lord Mars eas exalted in 9th house, having a near full aspect of 56 on 12th house. Hence, south India should receive excellent rains due to two exalted planets, but actually received less than normal rains. Hence, physical astronomy (Drikpaksha) fails utterly in this case to explain actual rainfall.

Hence, Venus is good but not much effective for 10th bhāva. Venus has two mutual aspect-relatives : Jupiter (51':25' mutual aspects with Venus) and Moon (34':22'). Jupiter's relation is somewhat stronger than that of Moon, but Jupiter is sitting in the 2nd bhāva of its bitter enemy debilitated Mercury, while Moon sits as samgrihi in Lagna which is lorded by exalted Sun. Therefore, Jupiter is almost ineffective in relation to Moon in their influences. Moon has 13' in NW and North India, but 21' in middle (and 28' in South). Data show more rains in central India (eg, +18% in West Central India ; Central NE contains parts of North too as it contains entire UP) than in NW and North (+10%). No other planet has more aspect on Central India than on North. Hence, it explains the rain data well in 10th bhāva.

Now, look at 9th bhāva. Its lord Mars is yogakāraka by dint of being lord of kendra and trikona (4, 9 th bhāvas) and is further strengthened by sitting in its fast friend Moon's 11th house with its frienf Saturn (look at aspect table's colour codes for friendships). But Mars is debilitated. Moreover, both Mars and its conjunct relative Saturn have almost zero aspect on 9th bhāva. Mars has 31':29' and Saturn has 38:34 aspect relation with Mercury, and Mercury has 25' aspect on northern Peninsula and 12' on southernmost India, but Mercury is debilitated. Saturn has strong aspect relation of 53:41 with exalted Sun, but Sun sits in 8th and has negligible influence on adjacent 9th bhāva. Only two planets are effective for 9th bhāva : Venus sitting there in friend Mars's house, and Jupiter having strong aspect relation of 51:25 with Venus. While Venus is fully effective and benefic, Jupiter also has strong fast-friendly aspects ranging from 51 to 47 on Peninsula. Hence, this region received very good rains : + 27.5 % in spite of ineffective lord.

(B) Drikpakshiya computation (JHORA) : Mesha Samkrānti at Meru (37:19 E ; 0:0 N) was at 21:04:29 PM IST , or at 18:34:29 Kenyā Time on 13 Apr 1946, with Lagna at Tulā 0º:49':28" (Saura Lagna was Simha 26º:54':37"). There was a difference of over +33º:54':51" degrees in Lagna.Drikpakshiya bhāvachalita can be made on following map by rotating the coloured bhāva circle by 34 degrees anti-clockwise, which will change the bhāvas of India by one rāshi and four degrees. Hence, northern half will fall in 9th and southern in 8th bhāvas.Venus will fall in start of 8th bhāva lorded by Mars, Sun in 7th. Venus has relation with Moon, but Moon sits in 12yh bhāva.Jupiter has good aspect, but is lorded by debilitated Mercury. It is bad for South. North is also bad, being devoid of planets and with its lord Venus in 8th. Thus, physical astronomy wrongly shows a drought in whole of India !!

(A) Suryasiddhāntic computation : Mesha samkrānti at Meru (37:19 E ; 0:0 N) was at 02:54:30.6 AM IST, 14 Apr 1955. Most of India falls in 6th house (shown by red arc on bhāva circle) lorded by Venus, and Peninsula in 5th lorded by Mars. Venus has mutual lordship (parivartana) relation with exalted Saturn, both of which have 42' and 43' aspect respectively on end point of vrish, and 6th bhāva's starting point has 31' aspect of Venus and 52' of Saturn. But eaxlted Sun having more aspect on North offsets, and therefore we can say all parths of 6th house should have equal rains. Data give +20.2 in NW, +20.6% in West Central and +13% in other regions which are divided between northern and central India.

Peninsular India lies in 5th house lorded by Mars. Mars sits in 5th house, but in Vrish rāshi as a samgrihi. It has 54:34 aspect relation with exalted Saturn, which causes a good (+13%) rains in South.

(B) Drikpakshiya computation (JHORA) : Mesha Samkrānti at Meru (37:19 E ; 0:0 N) was at 4:20:54 AM IST ,at 1:50:54 Kenyā Time or 14 Apr 1955, with Lagna Makara 15º:43':22" (Saura Lagna was Dhanu 24º:32':54"). There was a large difference of over +21º:10':28" degrees in Lagna, as a result of which following Bhāvachakra should be turned 21º degrees anti-clockwise. Hence, 5th bhāva will range from 4º:47':51" of Vrish to 3º:10':01" of Mithuna and will include whole of India excluding a few districts near Kanyākumarī. Its lord Venus in in 2nd house of exalted Saturn, the latter in 10th house of Venus. It suggests a very very good rains throughout 5th bhvāva due to parivartana relation which puts 5th bhāva under benefic control of exalted Saturn in Venus. But data give a moderately good rains, while 5th house and exalted Saturn suggest almost record rainfall. This year, Drikpakshiya chart shows very good rains, but it gives a much higher rainfall than actually recorded. Comparison with other years suggest that an exalted planet having near total aspect on a 5th bhāva must give much more than +14% rains only.

Monthly rainfall data of IMD (Indian Meterological Dept) for 136 years (1871-2006) has been arranged by scientists of IITM, Pune, which can be procured freely from its website ( Click_Here ). These data are in calendar year beginning from January. I converted them into financial year beginning from April, which is better for comparison with Mesha Samkrānti charts which now-a-days fall around 13-16 April. Venus in in fast friend Saturn's 9th house and aspects North, Central and South India 41', 39', 24' respectively. So far very good, but Venus is in control of Saturn due to bhāvesh-drishti (lord's aspect) of 49', and Saturn in highly malefic by dint of sitting in 6th house with Rahu. Saturn's full 60' aspect on northern portion of Vrish (ie, NW India) caused record deficit of -67% in NW. Moon in 11th house also reduced evil effects in South and 12th house by its own nature was also bad for north. But Sarvatobhadra Vedha of Moon was good for Assam and Sun was good for Uttar Pradesh. (B) On the basis of modern physical astronomy, Mesha samkrānti at Meru was at 19:44:47.2 PM IST or 17:14:47.2 PM Kenyā Time, 12 Apr 1899 , with Lagna at 9º:16':00" in Kanyā (by JHora) and Suryasiddhāntic Lagna at Mithuna 28º:16':25" having a huge difference of +70º:59:35 in Lagna, as a result of which bhāvachalita chakra should be rotated by 71º degrees in following map. Thus, middle of 9th bhāva will move to 12º degrees of Vrish. Most of India will fall in 9th bhāva which extends from Mesha 24º:07':54" to Vrish 24º:02':28". Lord of 9th bhāva Venus is under Saturn's 49' or 82% bhāvesh-drishti control, but Saturn is sitting in 4th house and is not as malefic as in Saurpakshiya chart. Hence, 9th bhāva should have little more than normal rains because Saturn was in its friend Jupiter's rāshi in Kendra. Mercury was not only combust in exalted Sun but defeated also in war due to less than 1º degree difference, hence Mercury is ineffective itself, but having a conjunction relation with exalted Sun is not inauspicious for NW India which falls in 10th bhāva lorded by Mercury and influenced by exalted Sun in 8th bhāva (mixed results). But most parts of India experienced historic drought, unexplained by physical astronomy.

Excepting some portion in southernmost parts, India falls in Lagna with lord Venus situated in middle of Lagna. But Venus was sandwiched between its enemy Mars on northern side and Saturn on the south. Placed netween Mars and saturn, Venus lost all its good power of being svagrihi. Saturn was samagrihi while Mars was in enemy's house , as a result NW India experienced worse drought (Mars was on that side). Saturn was a benefic by dint of being lord of kendra and trikona (10th and 9th houses respectively), and therefore Peninsular India escaped drought (only -1 % shortfall in rainfall). Most of TN and Kerala were in 12th house whose lord Mars had zero aspect, and only Jupiter was aspecting it (34' in end of 12th house and 23' near Kanyakumāri). jupiter was svagrihi in 8th. Hence, TN and Kerala got slightly better than normal rains. This year's example shows that some yogas work in mundane astrology as well, such as sandwiching of a benefic between two natural malefics destroying the good power of that benefic. Here, it is noteworthy that Saturn worked as a natural malefic in the sandwich yoga, while worked as a benefic in South India by dint of being lord of kendra and trikona. All these three planets were in Vāyu and Chandā naadis, which was not good for rains. (B) On the basis of modern physical astronomy, mesha samkānti at Meru was at 13:50:18 PM IST or 10:20:18 AM Kenyā Time, 13 Apr 1972 , with Lagna at 26º:23':29" in Vrish (by JHora) and Suryasiddhāntic Lagna at Vrish 21º:11':28" having a difference of +5º:12':01" in Lagna, as a result of which 12th house extends from 5º degrees to 10º:12' in Vrish rāshi. All other conditions are same as in Saurapakshiya case. But extension of 12th house means good rains should cover Karnataka and Andhra too, which is disproved by the regional data from IITM (Indian Institute of tropical Meteorology, Pune) shown in map on the left here. Physical astronomy fails in Karnataka and Andhra which did not get as good rains as TN and Kerala.
YEAR 1965 -------- ALL INDIA -20.3% ------- Penin -sular -18.1 ------- NW -26.1 ------- NE -8.47 ------- Central NE -21.8 -------- West Central -23	(A) Suryasiddhāntic computation : Mesha samkrānti at Meru (37:19 E ; 0:0 N) was at 17:00:33.6 AM IST, 13 Apr 1965 (test it in free Kundalee Software). Many planets are influential this year and a detailed analysis is needed. Excepting Peninsula and coastal East India, most of India is in 11th bhāva, whose lord Venus has a meagre aspect on 11th bhāva : 14' at Vrish end and 6' at start of 11th bhāva. Venus is under the influence of 44' lord's aspect (bhāvesh-drishti) relation. Venus is in conjunction with exalted Sun and debilitated plus combust Mercury. Exalted Sun has parivartana relation with Mars. Hence, bhāvesh-drishti influence of (44') Mars on Sun is ineffective and parivartana yoga is effective. Saturn has a full aspect relation with Mars and Moon has conjunction relation with Sun. Mars, Moon and Saturn are in watery nādis. Mars, Saturn and Moon have 8' to 16' , 39' to 46' and 14' to 22' aspect on Indian portions of 11th bhāva respectively. Saturn is in moolatrikona in 8th. Mars is lord of kendra and trikona (4th and 5th houses) and therefore a benefic. Moon is Lagnesh. Hence, these three related planets suggest a normal or slightly better than normal rains, with somewhat higher incidence in southern portion of 11th house, if Venus and its conjuncts are discounted. But actual data show drought instead of normal rains. Hence, Mars and Moon are exerting their influence not directly but as enmical relatives of Venus which is lord of 11th house, and are therefore only negating the good influence of Venus (being in 9th house). Saturn is neutral to Venus, hence it reduced the evil effect of drought in southern regions of 11th house. As a net result of all these effects, exalted Sun with Venus becomes most influential planet, which is casting a bitter enmical aspect of 15' in NW India and 7' on southern portions of 11th house. Hence, drought was severer towards NW and less severe elsewhere. Weak Mercury is ineffective. Mars, Moon and Saturn have higher aspect on north, but data show effective planets should have higher malefic aspect on north and NW. Sun, Venus and Mercury have such aspects. But Venus is benefic, whose influence is negated by Mars &c, while Mercury is ineffective. Hence, exalted but bitter enmical Sun decides the issue in favour of a more severe drought towards NW and north. Exalted Rāhu in 11th house fails to save drought, esp in NW India which was nearest to Rahu's location in chart. Hence, shadow planets (nodes) play insignificant roles in mundane astrology, and are influential only when all other planets are ineffective for a particular bhāva. Peninsula and coastal east is in 10th house lorded by Venus. Venus, Sun and Mercury have neglible aspect there. Jupiter sits there neutrally, as lord of 6th and 9th house, and foretells a normal rainfall on its own, but it has strong enmical aspect of Saturn (51') which works adversely on Jupiter through enmical aspect relations with its bitter enemies Mar and Moon, all of which are effective due to direct or indirect relations with lord Venus. Jupiter in Chandā nādi and enmical Saturn in Jala nādi are also preventing rains. (B) On the basis of modern physical astronomy, mesha samkrānti at Meru was at 17:59:20 PM IST or 15:29:20 Kenyā Time, 13 Apr 1965 , with Lagna at 10º:52':50" in Simha (by JHora) and Suryasiddhāntic Lagna at Karka 25º:24':59" having a difference of +15º:27:51 in Lagna, as a result of which middle of 10th bhāva moves from 0.3788 degrees in Vrish to about 16º degrees, and 10th bhāva almost overlaps all of India, excepting J & K. Lord Venus and its conjunct relatives exalted Sun and combust Mercury have higher aspect on north and negligible on south. Sun and Venus are in 9th bhāva (extending from Mina 27º:42':20' to Mesha 28º:55':24") and are auspicious for Noth and NW India which actually experienced severe drought ! Hence, physical astronomy utterly fails this year to explain actual data.
YEAR 2002 -------- ALL INDIA -18% ------- Penin -sular -19.4 ------- NW -34.7 ------- NE +4.5 ------- Central NE -20.5 -------- West Central -20.3	(A) Suryasiddhāntic computation : Mesha samkrānti at Meru (37:19 E ; 0:0 N) was at 6:46:57.1 AM IST, 14 Apr 2002 (test it in free Kundalee Software). This year IMD (Indian Meteorological Dept) and other scientific organizations dealing with weather forecasting were predicting a normal monsoon, but were surprized with a severe drought, fourth worst in recorded history. Suryasiddhāntic chart shows a mutual lordship (sthāna parivartana) relation between Venus and Mars in Rāsi Chart, but both are conjunct in the Bhāvachalita chart, together with Moon. Other relations are irrelevant for India. Most of India was in 4th house of Venus, Peninsula being in 3rd bhāva of Mars. There were Saturn and Rahu in 4t bhāva, and Venus-Mars-Moon in 3rd. Venus-Mars-Moon have almost no aspect on 4th house. Hence, Saturn ought to dominate 4th house. Saturn is in fast friend's house, being lord of Lagna and 12th bhāvas. 4th bhāva is not a bad house. Hence, at worst we should expect normal rainfall. Even if we suppose Saturn to be a malefic, its worst (or best) effects ought to be felt at about 6 degrees of 4th bhāva where Saturn was situated and not in NW India where worst drought occurred. Hence, we must ascribe the actual outcome to parivartana relation between Venus and Mars, which gave Venus a complete control over its house. Parivartana relation is the most powerful of all relations and complete control means that Saturn or rahu or even many exalted planets sitting in 4th house would be totally ineffective and only the lord Venus and its relatives would have any sway there. Moon is just 14 degrees ahead of Sun and is lord of 6th house, which makes the Moon highly malefic. Mars is also a malefic. Venus is sandwiched between two malefics, both of whom are enmical to Venus. Hence, the good influences of Venus are choked. Sum total of their aspects is 9' more in the north. Hence, while the whole of 4th bhāva receives equal effects of parivartana yoga, 9' extra aspect in north (actually NW India due to curved Merucentric meridians) meant more evil effect in NW India. Other major parts of India had more or less homogenous distribution of ~20% deficit, while NW had 35% deficit. Although finer nuances of medini Jyotisha is not our topic at present, here it is important to mention one anomaly which calls for some other ancient devices : Desha Chakra shown on left and Sarvatobhadra Chakra which gives regions with names beginning from 'a' and 't' (e.g, Assam, Tamil Nādu) being viddha by Mars, and a,v,k,h,d,l,n beibg viddha by Moon, none by Venus, in Merucentric chart. Moon is away, Venus is maliciously sandwiched, but Mars is located in southern India where it gives its own good results to viddha Tamil territory by dint of being lord of 10th house and sitting in 3rd , Assam also gets a respite from drought due to Mars (and Moon). All effective planets were in Vāyu or Chandā nādis, not conducive to good rains. (B) On the basis of modern physical astronomy, mesha samkrānti at Meru was at 5:38:06.1 AM IST or 3:08:06.1 Kenyā Time, 14 Apr 2002, with Lagna at 5º:19':41" in Kumbha (by JHora) and Suryasiddhāntic Lagna at Kumbha 22º:45':03" having a difference of -17º:25':22" in Lagna, as a result of which Merucentric Bhāvachalita in following map ought to be rotated clockwise by over 17º degrees. As a result, 4th bhāva will extend from Mesha 23º:47':09" to Vrish 23º:47':09", and entire NW will fall in 5th bhāva.Lord of 5th bhāva was Mercury, in friendly rāshi of Mars and combust in exalted Sun as well as being conjunct with Sun in 3rd bhāva. Besides, Sun and Mercury had 15' and 10' aspects on NW India. Exalted Sun's 15' aspect was enough for a better than normal rains, and to it we must add samgrihi Jupiter sitting in 5th bhāva of NW India. But data show a severe drought in NW India.Hence, physical astronomy fails miserably this year to explain actual data. Venus (21º:46':39") , Mars (6º:18':39") and Moon (13º:35':21") : Venus and Mars being in 4th and Moon in 3rd bhāva with Sun-Mercury. Although Venus was in the rāshi of Mars, it was lord of 4th bhāva and was sitting there. Therefore, in spite of being sandwiched between two malefics Mars and Moon, there was some respite due to shift of Moon to another bhāva and ownership of 4th bhāva by Venus. Thus, 5th bhāva shows excellent rains while 4th bhāva shows normal rains, which defy data.
YEAR 1918 -------- ALL INDIA -18% ------- Penin -sular -16.3 ------- NW -61 ------- NE +9.4 ------- Central NE -11.8 -------- West Central -21.6	(A) Suryasiddhāntic computation : Mesha samkrānti at Meru (37:19 E ; 0:0 N) was at 13:08:07.4 AM IST, 13 Apr 1918 (test it in free Kundalee Software). NW, north and most of central and western india was in Lagna lorded by Mercury which was combust in its enemy exalted Sun. Sun had 15' aspect on NW and 7' on middle of Vrish, and could have caused excellent rain because Mercury was powerless (being combust), but parivartana relation of Sun and Mars made Mars also effective for Lagna slightly. But these effects were minor due to Jupiter in Lagna, which was more effective for Lagna than only 15' aspect of Sun or of a weaker Mars. Jupiter was a high order malefic on account of following factors : (1) being lord of 11th and 2nd houses, (2) being in bitter enemy rāshi of Venus, sitting in Vāyu nādi which is owned by Jupiter : sitting in own nādi makes the nādi-phala a certainty, which here means more winds and less rains, and (4) Ketu conjunct with Jupiter : although nodes do not matter much in rains, but they slightly affect rainfall which is seen when other planets are totally ineffective. Another interesting fact was a chain of relations. Exalted Sun had a benefic (being exalted) parivartana relation with Mars, Mars had an evil (being lord of 6th) bhāvesh-drishti relation of 28' with Moon, Moon had an evil (being in enemy's 12th house) bhāvesh-drishti relation of 34' with Saturn, Saturn had a strong 47' bhāvesh-drishti relation with Venus, Venus had an 43' enmical bhāvesh-drishti relation with Jupiter, and Jupiter was related closely to Ketu and Rāhu. Jupiter was already bad for Lagna, and enmical influences of Saturn and Venus made the situation worse. Farther and weaker relations do not count much. Combination of all these factors caused severe drought in NW India : deficit of -61% ! In peninsula and coastal east India was in trika 12th house, and Moon sitting enmically there as being lord of 2nd and 3rd bhāvas made things worse. Moon was in Chandā nādi which does not give rains if the planet and bhāva is bad. Hence a drought in 12th house, which was not as severe as in Lagna because lord Venus was sitting in 9th bhāva and had 44' aspect on 12th house, although somewhat checked by Saturn's relation mentioned above. (B) On the basis of modern physical astronomy, Mesha samkrānti at Meru was at 16:47:09.1 PM IST or 14:17:09.1 Kenyā Time, 13 Apr 1918 , with Lagna at 22º:15':19" in Karka (by JHora) and Suryasiddhāntic Lagna at Mithuna 0º:30':29" having a large difference of +51º:44':50" in Lagna, as a result of which Bhāvachalita Chakra in the following map needs to be rotated anti-clockwise 51º:44':50" , as a result of which 11th bhāva will extend from 11º:21':11" in Vrish to 09º:42':52" in Mithuna. Most of Peninsula will fall in 10th bhāva lorded by Mars and rest of India in 11th bhāva lorded by Venus. Venus (at 313º:59':29") will fall in starting sandhi of 8th bhāva, having much more aspect on India than any other planet except Rāhu : aspect of Venus being 37' on NW India at the end of Vrish, and 42.36' on start of its 11th bhāva. If Venus in 8th bhāva is treated as a malefic causing drought, than it should cause more severe drought in the start of 11th bhāva which had higher aspect than on NW India which had lower aspect, but data show -61% deficit in rains in NW India and only about -22% around the upper Deccan (West Central india). But if Venus in 8th bhāva is treated as a malefic causing destruction by means of excessive rains on regions with high aspects (higher than 30' or 50%) then we should expect excess rains in all parts of 11th bhāva containing all India excepting Peninsula. Both these alternatives are not supported by actual data. Peninsula was influenced by Lagnesh Moon sitting there in 10th bhāva which should cause very good rains instead of -16% deficit as the data tell. Hence, physical astronomy fails to conform to data this year.
YEAR 1877 -------- ALL INDIA -17.3 ------- Penin -sular -0.14 ------- NW -41 ------- NE -5.6 ------- Central NE -26.7 -------- West Central -16.1	(A) Suryasiddhāntic computation : Mesha samkrānti at Meru (37:19 E ; 0:0 N) was at 22:31:19 AM IST, 11 Apr 1877 (test it in free Kundalee Software). Most of India was in 8th bhāva lorded by Venus which was exalted and combust in exalted Sun ; Venus was sitting in 6th bhāva with Moon. 8th bhāva produces destructive rains if its lord and relatives have high aspects, and drought if low aspects. Here, aspect of lord Venus is low (20' in north, 10' in middle and zero in south of Vrish). But its bitter enemy and conjunct relative Moon has good aspect (39') on NW, causing severe drought there. Here, combust and exalted Venus could not cause good rains as it did in other cases when not disturned by other planets because Venus (354º:32':50") was sandwiched between two malefics : Sun at 360º and Moon at 336º:28':22", all were malefics due to placement in 6th bhāva, and Moon being near Sun (tithi 14th black half). Benefic power of exalted Venus was choked due to sandwich effect, and therefore even Sun could act only as a bitter enemy of Venus and as a malefic, with aspect 15' on NW adding to the severity of drought there. South had negligible aspect of these afflicted planets, hence it escaped drought and was benefited by good aspect of other planets, most notably of Saturn which was auspicious by dint of being lord of kendra (4th bhāva) and trikona (5th bhāva) and sitting in its own 5th bhāva : Saturn had a near total aspect of 56' on south India, but could cause only a normal rainfall in Peninsula because it was not a relative of lords Venus in upper Deccan and Mars in southernmost India. Lord Mars was exalted and had an aspect 33' on South, and its conjunct relative Jupiter was svagrihi (in own house) and had an aspect 27' on South, but they could not cause excessve rains because their mutual enmical relation with Mercury caused the latter to oppose their good effects. But Mercury was combust and could not completely destroy the good effects of Mars and Jupiter which caused a more than normal rainfall in TN and Kerala as shown in more detailed map on the left. It is interesting to note that Karnataka received more rains than Andhra, although both had same aspects of Saturn (and other planets), because in Sarvatobhadra Chakra 'k, d' were viddha by Saturn ('k' cause good rains in Karnataka). (B) On the basis of modern physical astronomy, mesha samkrānti at Meru was at 4:17:57 AM IST or 1:47:57 Kenyā Time, 12 Apr 1877 , with Lagna at 15º:06':19" in Makara (by JHora) and Suryasiddhāntic Lagna at Tula 22º:29':31" having a huge difference of +82º:36':48" in Lagna, as a result of which most of kerala and TN were in 4th bhāva lorded by Mars and the rest of country was in 5th bhāva of Venus. Venus was in 3rd bhāva with Sun, both exalted. Venus was sandwiched beteen Moon and Sun. In Saurapakshiya method, both Moon and Sun were highly malefic by dint of being placed in 6th bhāva, which is not the case now. Now, they are in 3rd house, Moon being lord of 7th and Sun of 8th but Sun was exalted. Hence, at most we should predict normal conditions, and certainly not a severe drought. The benefic effects of Venus could be destroyed by full fledged malefics only, which is not the case. Hence, physical astronomy fails to conform to data this year.

NW and adjoing parts of India were in 7th bhāva lorded Mercury, while rest of India was in 6th bhāva lorded by Venus. Mercury and Venus were conjunct in 4th bhāva. Venus was exalted but highly inauspicious by dint of being lord of 6th and 11th bhāvas, and being in enemy Jupiter's house. Mercury was debilitated and it was also in enemy Jupiter's house. Jupiter had 57' bhāvesh-drishti aspect on Venus, and 53' bhāvesh-drishti aspect on Mercury ; hence both Venus and Mercury were in near total control of Jupiter which was malefic by dint of sitting in 8th bhāva, in spite of being exalted. Jupiter in its turn was in total control of 60' bhāvesh-drishti aspect of Moon which was malefic because of being lord of 8th house and sitting enmically in 2nd house. Mars was under 44 ' bhāvesh-drishti aspect control of Venus.Mars had parivartana relation with exalted Sun. These are all strong relations. Besides, Mercury had mutual aspect relation with Saturn, which is only a half strong relation but is important due to Saturn's high aspect on India. Thus, we have all planets being highly influential for India, which creates a highly complicated situation because some have friendly and some have enmical aspects. Let us start from the fact that most of India falls in 6th bhāva which normally means either drought or destructive rains if the bhāva is strong. Its lord exalted but malefic Venus and conjunct relative debilitated Mercury have more aspect on NW and north India than on south. Both of them are in enmical control of Jupiter, which means only bad effects (of Venus being lord of 6th and 11th houses and Mercury being debilitated or Neech) will be passed on and good effects (of exalted Venu in Kendra) will be suppressed. Jupiter is in enmical control of Moon, which means the same : good effects of exalted Jupiter will be suppressed by Moon and only bad effects of a Jupiter in 8th house will be passed on. Moon is not controlled by any planet and is final controller in this strong chain. Moon is highly malefic, being lord of 8th house, in enemy's sign, in 2nd bhāva, combust and malefic being near the Sun. In this chain, Venus, Mercury and Jupiter will pass on only evil effects to India, sum total of their aspects divided by three (for averaging) show 26' aspect on north, 16' on middle and 11' on south. Hence, north and NW has more evil effects than south. Data show severe drought in north and NW India (-20% deficit in rains, 38' aspect) as well as central India (30' aspect on regions having -8% to -32% deficit), while south had normal rains. Moon has more aspect on south (38') than on north (16). Moon being in its own Amrita nādi means regions having good aspects must receive good rains in spite of Moon being malefic (malefic Moon may give good rains in bad geographical or temporal pattern of distribution). Due to Moon, south India recreived positive rains. But all these influences were overtaken by the influence of Mars, which was in enemy's house, lord of 5th and 12th houses, sitting in 11th, which meant a normal rainfall due to Mars in regions of full aspect because Mars was half powerful due to being in enemy's sign. The real power power of Mars, which overtook the power of all other planets, was its parivartana relation with exalted Sun and bhāvesh drishti relation with exalted Venus. Two exalted planets transferred their powers to Mars. Mars had full 60' aspect on south, which resulted in a normal rainfall their (well above normal in Tamil Nadu and Kerala because T of Tamil and E of Kerala were pierced by Mars in Sarvatobhadra Chakra, no other planet pireced T and E). Mars also pierced G (Gujarat) but there Mars was opposed by Moon which also pierced G with friendship opposite to that of Mars. Merc:Sat relation being weak may be neglected. (B) On the basis of modern physical astronomy, Mesha samkrānti at Meru was at 4:59:05 AM IST or 2:29:05 Kenyā Time, 13 Apr 1920 , with Lagna at 25º:15':28" in Makara (by JHora) and Suryasiddhāntic Lagna at Dhanu 5º:53':18" having an appreciable difference of +19º:22:10 in Lagna, as a result of which Bhāvachalita circle in following map will need to be rotated anti-clockwise by 19 degrees. Thus 4th bhāva will extend upto Vrish 14:17:37 in central India and north to it will be 5th bhāva, both lorded by Venus because mid-points of both bhāvas will fall in Vrish. Exalted Venus as lord of 4th and 5th bhāvas, sitting in sign of exalted Jupiter in 7th bhāva, the latter placed in sign of Moon situated in Lagna, follow same chain of relationsas shown above, but their evil effects are gone, due to which onlt excellent rains could be predicted for whole of India. Mars was in sandhi, hence less effective. Data show drought instead of excellent rains. Hence, physical astronomy utterly fails this year.
YEAR 1901 -------- ALL INDIA -15.6% ------- Penin -sular -3.21 ------- NW -48.2 ------- NE -5.72 ------- Central NE -20.2 -------- West Central -11.1	(A) Suryasiddhāntic computation : Mesha samkrānti at Meru (37:19 E ; 0:0 N) was at 3:33:50.2 AM IST, 13 Apr 1901 (test it in free Kundalee Software). NW India lies in 6th bhāva lorded by Mercury and rest of India is in 5th bhāva lorded by Venus. Exalted but combust Venus with exalted Sun in 4th house and lording 5th plus 6th bhāvas normally produces excellent rains, but here lord of 4th bhāva Mars is afflicted in 8th house and has a lordship exchange (parivartana) relation with Sun, due to which 4th house is in complete and evil control of Mars ; this evil influence of Mars destroys the otherwise benefic combination of Sun and Venus. Venus is in Jupiter's rāshi which has a strong 47' bhāvesh-drishti control of Venus. Jupiter is in its own rāshi in Lagna and is Lagnesh. juoiter and its conjuncts in Lagna have high aspect on south India (Jup :44'), due to which adverse effect of Mars was mitigated there considerably and a normal rainfall waqs ensured with only -3% deficit. Parivartana relation is stronger than 47' bhāvesh-drishti relation, hence Jupiter could not overpower the evil effect of Mars and could only reduce it, due to higher aspect of Jupiter than those of Mars or its parivartana relative Sun on South India. Jupiter had no aspect near the end of 5th bhāva, which had higher deficit than south India. NW India was in Mercury's 6th trika bhāva. Mercury was debilitated, and lord of 6th and 9th bhāvas. A debilitated Mecury with exalted Sun gives fine results, but in this case Sun was not conjunct. Hence a severe drought in NW India followed. Jupiter had a 30' (i.e, half) bhāvesh-drishti control over Mercury, which prevented a record level of drought due to 6th bhāva and its debilitated lord. (B) On the basis of modern physical astronomy, Mesha samkrānti at Meru was at 8:00:03.1 AM IST or 5:30:03.1 Kenyā Time, 13 Apr 1901 , with Lagna at 13º:25':22" in Mina (by JHora) and Suryasiddhāntic Lagna at Makara 3º:51':40" having a large difference of +69º:33:42 in Lagna, as a result of which Bhāvachalita circle in following map will need to be rotated anti-clockwise by ~70º. Thus 3th bhāva will extend from Kanyākumari upto Vrish 27º:38':47" in central India, only Punjab and JK being in 4th bhāva lorded by Mercury. Lord of 3rd bhāva Venus (Mina 25º:18':55") was in Lagna, Sun being in 2nd bhāva. Thus, Sun:Mars parivartana relation did not affect Venus and the latter being exalted exerted benefic influences on its bhāvas, while data show a severe drought. Hence, physical astronomy utterly fails this year.
YEAR 1968 -------- ALL INDIA -14.4% ------- Penin -sular -9.65 ------- NW -33.2 ------- NE +1.83 ------- Central NE -13.8 -------- West Central -17.9	(A) Suryasiddhāntic computation : Mesha samkrānti at Meru (37:19 E ; 0:0 N) was at 11:38:22.6 AM IST, 13 Apr 1968 (test it in free Kundalee Software). Excepting a major portion of NW India in 2nd bhāva of Mercury, whole of rest India was in Lagna lorded by Venus. Venus was exalted in 11th bhāva with Saturn, in the rāshi of Jupiter and aspected with 50' bitter enmical Drishti of Jupiter which destroyed all benefic effects of Venus. Saturn is also enmically aspected by 54' drishti of lord Jupiter which was a malefic (being lord of 8th and 11th bhāvas). Venus and Saturn are combust too. A very complex situation is created. Exalted Venus combust in exalted Sun normally produces good overall effect, but here Sun is in another (bad) bhāva and lord Jupiter is opposing the benefic influences of Venus. Weak Saturn was sandwiched between two exalted planets and was therefore ineffective. Both Venus and Saturn being neutralized, and Jupiter having negligible aspect on India, Moon was the only effective planet by dint of its high aspect (33' at end of Lagna and 45' on India's southernmost tip), which was languishing in 6th bhāva but had full aspect relation with exalted Sun, and was a close elative of Venus too (dual relations of bhāvesh-drishti and mutual aspect relation). Rainfall in Lagna approximately followed the aspects of Moon on various Merucentric meridians. Mercury was debilitated and combust in 12th bhāva with exalted Sun, Sun being sandwiched between two malefics Mercury and Mars. Jupiter had 55' bitter enmical bhāvesh-drishti on Mercury. Thus, Sun could not help Mercury and Jupiter allowed only evil traits of Mercury to pass, which caused a drought in NW India where Mercury has 22' aspect. Mercury and all its conjucts were in non-watery nādis too. (B) On the basis of modern physical astronomy, Mesha Samkrānti at Meru was at 12:17:19 PM IST or 9:47:19 Kenyā Time, 13 Apr 1968 , with Lagna at 18º:44':35" in Vrish (by JHora) and Suryasiddhāntic Lagna at Vrish 9º:18':49" having a difference of +9º:25:46 in Lagna, as a result of which whole of India was in Lagna excepting most of TN and Kerala which were in 12th bhāva (upto 3º:13':43" in Vrish). Lagnesh Venus was in 11th bhāva with Sun, Mercury, Saturn and Rāhu. Mars was in 12th, Jupiter in 4th and Moon in 5th. As for Lagna, we can say good effects of exalted Lagnesh Venus and its conjuncts were in enmical control of high bhāvesh-drishti of jupiter, but exalted Sun was not in Jupiter's rāshi, and by dint of being conjunct of Venus Sun must exert its benefic influence on North India, which actually witnessed -33% deficit in rains. Hence, physical astronomy utterly fails this year.
YEAR 1979 -------- ALL INDIA -13.8% ------- Penin -sular +1.81 ------- NW +7.65 ------- NE -10.6 ------- Central NE -32.1 -------- West Central -16.6	(A) Suryasiddhāntic computation : Mesha samkrānti at Meru (37:19 E ; 0:0 N) was at 7:57:02 AM IST, 14 Apr 1979. Barring J&K and parts of Punjab, entire India was in 3rd bhāva, lorded by Venus sitting in Lagna with friends Mercury and Mars. Mecury was debilitated and in enemy Jupiter's rāshi. Mars was samgrihi (neutral) and Venus in enemy Jupiter's rāshi. As we saw earlier, debilitated Mercury acquired the powers of its powerful relatives when it was not alone. These three planets are in Lagna, all in watery nādis, Mars and Venus being samgrihi (neural), it is noteworthy that Mercury and Mars were in near total control of high bhāvesh-drishti of Jupiter, and Venus was in near total control of high bhāvesh-drishti of Saturn. Saturn in 6th bhāva of its bitter enemy Sun was ill placed with Rahu. Saturn had a full 60' aspect in middles regions of India, 36' on north of 3rd bhāva and 45' on south. Hence, Saturn was most baleful for central India, which experienced severe drought. Regions with less than full aspect of Saturn experienced relatively more benefic effects of lord Venus and its conjuncts in Lagna. As for J&K and Punjab, it was marred by debilitated Mercury under bitter enmical bhāvesh-drishti of Jupiter, causing severe drought, which was more than offset by excellent rains in large parts of Rājasthān not clear by macro level data presented here. Finer regional break-ups will be studied in Desha-Chakra centred at Vidishā in MP. (B) On the basis of modern physical astronomy, Mesha samkrānti at Meru was at 7:59:07 AM IST or 5:29:07 Kenyā Time, 14 Apr 1979 , with Lagna at 13º:15':43" in Mīna (by JHora) and Suryasiddhāntic Lagna at Mīna 11º:33':20.5" having a small difference of +1º:42:22.5 in Lagna, as a result of which India falls almost entirely in 3rd bhāva (Mesha 27º:43':31" to Vrish 27º:22':04"). Mars and Mercury remain in Lagna, but Venus shifts to 12th bhāva in the bhāvachalita. Other things remaining nearly the same as in Saurapakhiya chart, such conditions suggested drought throughout India, and fails to explain more than normal rains in NW and South. Even with a small difference in Lagna, Hence, physical astronomy utterly fails this year due to change in bhāva of Venus.

CONCLUSIONS of 20 Case Studies

While Suryasiddhantic (Saurapakshiya) computations prove to be correct in all 20 cases, Drikpakshiya computatons based on physical astronomy utterly fails in 19 cases, and gives overestimate in 1955. Hence, physical astronomy fails almost completely.

Due to great difference in transit time between Suryasiddhantic and physical planets, there was a large difference in Lagna in most cases which made comparison easy. For instance, the 10 worst rainfall years show an average difference of 34º:21' in Lagna.

In individual horoscopy, Saurapakshiya and Drikpakshiya physical planets and bhāvas show relatively small differences of at most a few degrees, which cause Drikpakshiya D1 chart to perform well in about 70% cases (this count is from a study carried out by Mr Arun Bansal, maker of Leo Gold software and editor of Future Point, this report was published in his editorial). But even a 15' difference in Sun will cause a 6 hour difference in samkrānti timing, due to which Lagna will differ by 3 rāshis ! hence, for a comparison of efficacy of Suryasiddhanta and physical astronomy for astrological purposes, mundane charts of solar transits are best means. In individual horoscopes, most of the software using astrologers remain contended with 70% good results and imagine rest 30% to be due to wrong birth time &c, and neglect the importance of finer divisionals if they fail to deliver. Suryasiddhanta works 100% perfectly in individual horoscopy too, but those enamoured with the success of physical science in physical progress of the world seem determined to bury Suryasiddhanta because they compare planetary positions instead of comparing the astrological results.

It should be noted that I did not select years for comparison according to any subjective criteria, I selected ALL best and worst years of known recorded history without any exception.

A peculiar phenomenon has been watched in these studies. Among 10 cases of best rainfall, 4 cases had exalted Venus in conjunction with exalted Sun, Venus being combust in 3 out of 4 cases. Among 10 cases of worst rainfall, 4 cases had Venus in conjunction with exalted Sun, Venus being combust in 3 out of 4 cases, exalted in 3 cases and both in 2 cases. In all these eight cases which constitute 40% of all 20 cases studied here, Sun and Venus had bitter enmical relation always. It is interesting to note that half of such 8 cases produced excessive rains, while other half produced severe droughts. It is wrong to deduce anything from just this information. All these eight cases must be closely examined to find out the peculiarities of overall conditions. A horoscope has a cumulative effect and just one or two traits should not be used to predict anything. These eight cases are as follows :

Evidence of Modern Value of Precession in Bhāskaracharya's Work based on Suryasiddhānta

In the chapter "Direction, Place and Time" (Suryasiddhānta, Ch.iii), E Burgess writes :

Quote: (bracketed words are mine) : The (Surya Siddhāntic) theory which the passage (verses 9-12), in its present form, is actually intended to put forth is as follows : the vernal equinox librates westward and eastward from the fixed point, war Piscium, assumed as the commencement of the sidereal sphere-- the limits of the libratory movement being 27 degrees in either direction from that point, and the time of a complete revolution of libration being the six-hundredth part of the period called the Great Age (ie, Mahāyuga as defined by Burgess in chapter i,15-17, where he gave it a span of 4320000 years), or 7200 years; so that the annual rate of motion of the equinox is 54".Unquote:

This is the interpretation of existing version of Surya Siddhānta ( त्रिंशत्कृत्यो युगे भानां चक्रे प्राक् परिलम्बते ..., SS,iii.9) in own words of E. Burgess , "as it is actually intended to put forth" by all traditional commentators. This is exactly what I illustrated with example in the illustrated example of computation of ayanamsha.

The moot point is this : Burgess knew the traditional interpretation (भानां चक्रे.., ie pendulum like motion of nakshatra orbit itself) , but gave his own meaning based upon modern concept of precession of equinoxes , and tried to create doubts about the authenticity of these verses (iii, 9-12) by putting forth deliberately false arguments. Let us examine Burgess.

In verse-9 (Suryasiddhānta, Ch.iii), he translates "pari-lambate" as "falls back", although he says lambate means "lag, hang back, fall behind" and 'pari' means "about, round about". Therefore, pari-lambate should have been translated as "fall back roundabout" and not merely as "fall back" according to own logic of Burgess. If the circle of asterisms lags roundabout any fixed point (whether Revati or Chitrā), it is a to and fro motion as all traditional commentators accepted. Modern concept of precession is something different from the original concept of ayanāmsha. Theon in West had mentioned this oscillating motion, Arab astronomers also accepted it, and almost all Europeans accepted it upto Renaissance, after which Hipparchus was rediscovered and modern concept of precession became a well established fact in astronomy. But this concept of equinoctial precession (as well as anomalistic precession) was also known to ancient Indians and Greeks.

Burgess wrongly quotes Bhāskara-II, because he relied upon a wrong translation of Bhāskara by Colebrooke (As. Res., xii 209 ; Essays, ii,374, etc) and did not try to examine Siddhānta Shiromani which was wrongly translated by Lancelot Wilkinson due to Colebrooke's influence. Bhāskara-II did not give his own opinion at all, and merely quoted Surya Siddhānta and Mujjāl (elsewhere Munjāla and Manjula), saying Suryasiddhānta gives -30000 revolutions of sampāt or equinoctial point per Kalpa while ayana has a motion of +199669 revolutions per Kalpa (of 4320 million years). Bhāskara's own opinion was that these should be followed, which means both Surya Siddhānta and Mujjāla were correct in Bhāskara's opinion. Colebrooke, Burgess, Wilkinson, etc have misquoted Siddhānta Shiromani and created an impression that ancient Indians were inept in astronomical observations, as Whitney shamelessly declared in his prologue to Burgess, but the Hindi translation by Satyadeva Sharmā is correct, although he could not get the real meaning.

The startling fact is that Siddhānta Shiromani clearly says that "the point of intersection of equatorial plane and ecliptic" (which is the very definition of equinox) has a negative motion of 30000 revolutions per Kalpa according to Suryasiddhānta, while Mujjala's value of ayana's motion is +199669, and both (Suryasiddhānta and Mujjala ) must be added to get the final motion (of the equinox ). Hence, we get +169669 revolutions per Kalpa, which gives (4320000000 / 169669 =) 25461 years per revolution or 50.9" per year, which is very near to modern value of about 50.3" per year for precession of equinoxes.

We must not forget that Hipparchus had given a period of 36000 years for precession, which was not corrected by Europeans till the onset of modern age. It is unfortunate that Siddhānta Shiromani is still being misinterpreted by foreigners, and if a true rendering is offered by Indian scholars, they are abused, esp by those who do not care to consult the originals and declare the forign missionaries to reliable. Bhāskara-II neither excluded Suryasiddhānta, nor Mujjāla, but mentioned the both must be used, which is clear from verse-19, where he clearly asks to add Mujjāla's ayana-chalam to Suryasiddhāntic sampāt-chalanam (this sampāt-chalanam is anomalistic precession with a period of 144000 years per cycle, against modern value of 136000 years).

Another startling fact is that Bhāskara-ii differentiates sampāt-chalanam of Suryasiddhānta from ayana-chalanam of Mujjāla, and says both must be added before computing phenomena like declension, ascensional differences, etc. But modern commentators like Colebrooke misinterpret Bhāskara-II deliberately, and imply that sampāt-chalanam of Suryasiddhānta quoted by Bhāskara-ii was an erroneous thing which must be forgotten, while ayana-chalanam of Mujjāla was a crude approximation of modern precession. But this interpretation is falsified by Bhāskara's original verses as shown above. The root of this problem lies in the fact that sampāt-chalanam of Suryasiddhānta is a distinct phenomenon from ayana-chalanam of Mujjāla according to Siddhānta Shiromani, but readers are not informed of the real meaning of Siddhānta Shiromani and false quotation from Siddhānta Shiromani was quoted by Colebrooke and Burgess (12th verse, chap.iii). This is a sign of intellectual incompetence and dishonesty of Western "experts" who are blindly followed by brown sāhibs of India. Those who do not consult the original texts cited above will not believe me.

Siddhānta-tattva-viveka by Kamlākara Bhatt is a medieval text, which clearly states that Saurpaksha is distinct from Drikpaksha. Saurpaksha (astronomy of bhuvaloka) is Suryasiddhānta as it exists. Drikpaksha (astronomy of Bhooloka or physical/material/sensory world) is that version of Suryasiddhānta which was not preserved because it was useless in astrology. Siddhānta Shiromani uses many concepts of Drikpakshiya astronomy, as the instance cited above proves. Saurpakshiya Suryasiddhānta does not contain any refence to 30000 cylces per Kalpa mentioned by Bhāskara-II. He was quoting from Drikpakshiya Suryasiddhānta which as a text had been lost ; Bhāskara-II said in his own Vāsanābhāshya commentary of Siddhānta-shiromani that Suryasiddhānta is not available ("anupalabdha") and he was quoting it on the basis of "āgama". Only its fragments are left, scattered here and there. Modern commentators confuse both variants of Suryasiddhānta. Siddhāntatattvaviveka is prescribed in post-graduate (Ganitāchārya) syllabus of Sanskrit universities, but no modern commentator has ever tried to translate it or comment on it.

According to Bhāskara-ii , negative sampāt-chalanam of Drikpakshiya Suryasiddhānta should be added to positive ayana-chalanam of Mujjāla to get final Drikpakshiya precession, which is very close to modern value. Ayana-chalanam of Mujjāla is also Drikpakshiya, because Saurpakshiya entities are not used in Drikpakshiya astronomy, and vice versa. I have put some of the most important extant theorems of Drikpakshiya Suryasiddhānta at a website. I had put parts of it at one of most popular websites, where a German "Indologist" deleted it and abused me profusely ; later I found those deleted materials at an Australian website, without any name of author!!. But I am here divulging one important secret of ancient science of India which has been neglected by wrongheaded commentators.

Mujjāla's ayana-chalanam, as mentioned in Siddhānta Shiromani, gives a period of (4320 million / 199669 = ) 21636 years per cycle. Siddhānta Shiromani says that it is ayanachalanam and not precession, precession is obtained after substracting (Saurpakshiya) Suryasiddhāntic sampātchalanam. If this 21636 year cycle is not precession, what is it ??

Readers should read a Wikipedian article Milankovitch cycles ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milankovic_cycles ) which informs :"Earth's axis completes one full cycle of precession approximately every 26,000 years (25771.5 precisely at present, 25789.5 years is long term mean). At the same time, the elliptical orbit rotates, more slowly, leading to a 21,000-year cycle between the seasons and the orbit... This orbital precession is in the opposite sense to the gyroscopic motion of the axis of rotation(cf. anomalistic precession as distinct from equinoctial precession), shortening the period of the precession of the equinoxes with respect to the perihelion from 26,000 to 21,000 years." (at some sites of NOAA of USA, 22000 is mentioned instead of 21000)

Ayana-chalanam of Mujjāla is not orbital precession, it is the most important of all components of Milankovitch cycles as this Wikipedian definition shown. If we take cue from Siddhānta Shiromani, the aforementioned Wikipedian clause can be rewritten thus : This orbital precession of equinoxes is in the opposite sense to the gyroscopic motion of the axis of rotation, shortening the period of the precession of the equinoxes with respect to the perihelion from 25771 to 21,636 years.

Siddhānta Shiromani also says that Mujjāla's ayana-chalanam (21,636 years per cycle) is opposite to sampāta-chalanam. Bhāskara-ii clearly defines sampāta-chalanam as "the point of intersection of equatorial plane and ecliptic" (which is the very definition of equinox). Hence, what Siddhānta Shiromani says is exactly what Wikipedia informs us, the only difference is that Siddhānta Shiromani is misinterpreted and declared to be obscurantist, and the great cycles mentioned in Siddhānta Shiromani is "discovered" by 20th century scientists. But we must remember Bhāskara-ii did not discover these things, he acknowledged Suryasiddhānta and Munjāla.

Bhāskara-ii knew Drikpakshiya Suryasiddhānta, which has not survived because it was not useful in astrology. In his formula of precession, Bhāskara-II used a figure 30000 cycles per Kalpa. Bhaskara-II got an approximate value of 50.9" per year, which was the most precise value before modern astronomy developed in the West. Here I quote a Puranic verse which proves knowledge of equinoctial precession in Puranic times :
उत्तानपादपुत्रोऽसौ मेढीभूतो ध्रुवो दिवि ।
स हि भ्रमन् भ्रामयते नित्यं चन्द्रादित्यौ ग्रहैः सह ।।

It means : "Uttanpāda's son Dhruva is the fixed point in the Heavens , round which all planets including Sun and Moon, but Dhruva himself also moves round" . Round what ? Mt Meru, which is the only fixed point in Cosmos according to Purānic-epic stories. Hence, the bhachakra also librates with respect to this fixed point Meru.

According to Bhāskara-II, orbital precession is derived by substracting anomalistic precession (sampāt-chalanam) from the first component of Milankovitch cycles (Munjāla's ayana-chalanam). Bhāskara-II acknowledged earlier authors. Hence, we must conclude that modern values and concepts of orbital precession, anomalistic precession, Milankovitch cycles, etc were known to ancient Indians well before Bhāskara-ii.

But two things about confusing terminology must be borne in mind : this sampāt-chalanam he finally gets by combining the two quantities mentioned above. According to Bhāskara-II, Suryasiddhāntic sampāt-chalanam is 30000 per Kalpa. He does not give a name for the term which is finally obtained by combining this sampāt-chalanam with Munjāla's ayana-chalanam, but the definition he provides for Suryasiddhāntic sampāt-chalanam is exactly the definition of the final quantity whose name he does not provide. Hence, there were many types of sampāt-chalanams !! This is not a case of confusion of terms. It is a result of Saurpakshiya term with Drikpakshiya terms bearing same names but having different magnitudes and sometimes even having difference in basic properties !

Second confusion is due to use of the term ayana-chalanam for Munjāla's precession. It is quite distinct from Saurpakshiya Suryasiddhāntic ayana-chalanam (trepidation) as mentioned in existing text. Burgess could not digest this theory of libration (oscillation or trepidation, ie, ayanāamsha - motion) and tried to distort the meaning of terms to fit modern view of orbital precession with this Saurpakshiya precession. Bhāskara-ii knew and respected Suryasiddhānta which he cited and used in his computations as shown above, and gave exact value of Drikpakshiya precession. Therefore, it is foolish to impose Drikpakshiya precession (50.9" per year according to Bhāskara-II, 50.3" really) upon Saurpakshiya ayanamsha (54" per year, oscillating within a range of ± 27 degrees). (There are further corrections on Drikpakshiya precession which give a final value of one revolution in 25771.4 years, exactly equal to the value deduced by NASA - JPL , but these corrections requires some long theorems to prove).

I do not want to say that all ancient texts are true and should be blindly followed. But it is equally wrong to deride them as outdated and obscurantist just because they could not be understood by moderns.We have yet to discover the real Wonder that Is India. Unless and until ancient texts are proven false, it is suicidal to reject them.

DECLENSION of the SUN :

Suryasiddhanta gives a value of 24 degrees for maximum declension of the Sun, which is Saurpakshiya value used in astrology. For getting Drikpakshiya value, multiphy its sine with cosine of half its value and get the arcsine of the resultant, you will get 23.26':37".481175683 . It is the long term mean, which was for 12 Jan 2000 AD. If we make nutation correction, highly accurate table of Sun's Declension can be made. It reveals a startling fact : terms of physical astronomy are intrinsically based upon Suryasiddhantic and integral quantities !

After reading its contents, type -998000 , 2001 and 1000 respectively in its three text boxes and click the Submit button. You will get "Orbital Parmameters for the Earth" from -998000 A.D. (ie, 998000 BCE) to 2000 A.D. at intervals of 1000 years. Three parameters are given : Eccentricity (of Earth's orbit round the Sun), Obliquity , and Longitude of Perihelion. Copy these data and paste them into Microsoft Excel and then select the last column and insert a chart with line option selected, you will get following chart. In Excel, place the mouse ponter at the lowest points of curve at those points where '16' and '984' are typed in red in the picture below, you will get data for those points. Between these two points, there are 46 undulations of the curve, during 984-16 = 968000 years. But between point 79 and 89 : a full cycle is not possible in merely 10000 years (between points 79 and 89), or a half cycle in only 2000 years between points 87 and 89. Therefore, this aberration must be excluded, and there are only 45 full cycles during 968000 years. Hence, one average cycle is of 21511.1111 years. But even a cursory look at the curve will convince you that this average actually varies considerably, and had highly erratic behaviour at some juntures. For instance, points 552 and 568 suggest one cycle in just 16000 years, while between 935 and 962 one cycle took 27000 years. Hence, 21511 is a mean value (with ± 5500 year fluctuations) during past one million years based upon most modern formula (a formula, not data). Suryasiddhānta, Munjāla and Bhāskara-ii give a long-term average of 21635.807 years. Modern scientists do not possess adequate data and formula to refute this traditional value given by Indian astrologers. This cycle shows ± 5500 year fluctuations, hence it is not possible to determine whether Suryasiddhāntic value of 21636 years is correct or the average of 968000 years (=21511 years) deduced from following graph is more reliable, because the difference between them is very small : of only 21636 - 21511 = 124.7 years only , as compared to ~5500 year fluctuation in this cycle itself. (Read the matter after this picture.)

A closer look at this graph will show that there are two cycles of some long term phenomenon ranging about less than hald a million years per cycle, one half half cycle of which has shorter periods of this perihelion cycle and another half cycle has longer periods. This is due to superimposition of another equation on the equation of Perihelion graph : the effect of change in Earth's eccentricity, which shows a long term periodicity of about 96555.56 years (a mean value, not an exact figure) computed from same NASA website following same procedure (9 cycles in 869000 years). Harmonic addition of both periodicities produce following maximum and minimum ranges of Perihelion periodicities :

(1 / 21511) - (1 / 96555.56) = (1 / 27677)
(1 / 21511) + (1 / 96555.56) = (1 / 17592)

The arithmetic mean of 27677 and 17592 is 22634.5 years, with ± 5042.5 year fluctuation, but this variation is elliptical, hence arithmetic mean gives a wrong average.

The eccentricity cycle of ~96555.56 years is a major cause of glacial cycles.

This Perihelion Cycle of 21636 years is the result of mixture of two functions : precessional cycle of 25771.4 years, and anomalistic shift of one cycle per ~135000 years :

(1 / 21635.8) - (1 / 25771.4) = (1 / 134825.9073)

Suryasiddhāntic value of anomalistic period is 144000 years as given by Bhāskara-ii. It needs Mahāyuga, Manvantara and Kalpa corrections in the following manner, in which 4200000 years of Drikpakshiya Mahāyuga has been represented by 'M' :

(1 / 144000) + (2 / M) - (1 / 71M) - (1 / 14*71M) = ( 1 / 134824.638836)

The small gap between 134825.9073 and 134824.638836 is due to a period of ~14 billion years, which is an optical illusion due to a complex phenomenon. There are 14 universes (bhuvanas) according to traditional Indian view, our universe being in the middle. Hence, we can view 7 universes at any given time in any one direction. According to Suryasiddhānta, slightly less than 2 billion years have elapsed since Creation. When we look into 7 universes, we see into 14 billion years which is actually seven different space-time continuums of 2 billion years each. if this factor is taken into account, above equation will become perfect :

( 1 / 134824.638836) - (1 / 134825.9073) = (1 / ~14 billion years)

In same fashion, the apparently crude value of precessional period given by Bhāskara-ii is corrected to give the exact figure. Instead of using the figure 30000 cycles per Kalpa or 144000 years per cycle, we ought to use the corrected term of 134825.9073 years per cycle in the equation of precession for a comparison with modern data. Hence, we get :

( 199669 / 4320000000) - (1 / 134825.9073) = (1 / 25771.4)

25771.4 years per cycle is the most modern value of orbital precession of Earth. In above equations, 'M' represents one Drikpakshiya Mahāyuga of 4200000 years, 71M is one Manvantara, 14 such Manvantaras make one Kalpa.

While making observations, modern scientists mix up all seven universes, while ancients gave figures for a particular space-time continuum at a time. They knew which frame of reference to use in which context, because they could "see" but we are blind (vid is the root of video and also of Veda and Vedānga).

Now, look at the code of NASA program which gave above figures at at http://aom.giss.nasa.gov/SOLAR/ORBPAR.FOR

It shows that a small table based upon modern data has been used to project tables for long periods, which may be reliable for short periods, but in the absence of many long term motions in the outer sky this program may deceive us in the long period projections it gives. For instance, this NASA site allows above data from one million years before 2000 AD to ten million years in future. Eleven million years of data give some long term trends which are not visible in short term graphs. The obliquity curve shows a ~1286500 year long cycle during which the maximum range within which obliquity changes itself shrinks and grows peiodically. There is no known explanation of this phenomenon. But a comparison with the long term changes in eccentricity shows that tge obliquity graph has close resemblance with eccentricity graph, and there are fewer long terms cycles in eccentricity graph than in obliquity graph. The eccentricity graph gives one cycle for 2019000 years approximately, which is exactly half of Drikpakshiya component of a Mahāyuga of 4200000 years equal to 4137562 years which requires an explanation.

Eccentricity and Obliquity of Earth's Orbit for 11 million years (NASA)

In the Drikpakshiya Suryasiddhāntic equation of anomalistic (and orbital ) precesson shown above, there were terms shown in red : (2 / M) - (1 / 71M) - (1 / 14*71M), where M stood for 4200000 years. The first component was of (2 / 4200000 years ) . Same term appears as (2 / 4137562 years ) in the eccentricity graph. Following is the Drikpakshiya Suryasiddhāntic equation of this term :

{1 + (1/4137561.9278584)} = {1 + (1/M)} x {1 + (1/71M)} x {1 + (1/[71Mx14])}

The 19-year cycle of Vedānga Jyotisha used by Meton of athens too comprised of 235 lunar months. 235 lunar months divided with 19 gives us 365.246743924320183 days. If it is divided with {1 + (1/4137561.9278584)}, we get 365.24665564850413050493379669683 days, which is the exact value of Metonic Year of Greece or of Romak Siddhānta of Indian version of Alexandrian (actually ancient Egyptian) science, which was originally based upon Drikpakshiya Suryasiddhānta.

So far, many propositions and equations would have seemed mere coincidences or far-fetched. Look at the following proof of Mahāyuga which is a cardinal equation of Drikpakshiya Suryasiddhānta (= Vedic for abbraviation ) :

Annual difference between motions of True Sun (TS) and Mean Sun (MS) is

( TS2 - TS1 ) - ( MS2 - MS1) = { 360 degrees / ( 4200000 - AP) } = 0.318934857156473481 seconds per annum.

In it AP is anomalistic period. Its value was 134825.9073 years as deduced above from Bhāskara's equation above. But here we are talking of true motion of Sun, which needs the Saurpakshiya motion of anomaly to be accounted for, which is quite different from Drikpakshita motion of anomaly. The latter has a value of about 135000 years per cycle which gives an anomalistic year of 365.25905 days. But the former has only 387 cycles per Kalpa, and one cycle of 11162790.7 years. Due to this Saurapakshiya shift, resultant Drikpakshiya anomalistic period will be of 136474.2645105 years. It needs another correction due to a ~39 million year Drikpakshiya motion, which gines a resultant value of ~136000 years for anomalistic cycle. Put this value in the equation below,

( TS2 - TS1 ) - ( MS2 - MS1) = { 360 degrees / ( 4200000 - 136000) } = Sine of annual anomalistic shift multiplied with maximum value of equation of centre =

0.3188976378 seconds per annum is equal to Sine of annual anomalistic shift multiplied with maximum value of equation of centre (paramamandaphala) which gives a value of 6902.56241634 seconds of arc for maximum value of equation of centre (Drikpakshiya paramamandaphala) ; Lahiri gives 6904.6".

This value of Drikpakshiya paramamandaphala is equal to 1.917378449 degrees, Sine of its half is the eccentricity of orbit equal to 0.016731502727386339 from above equations. Explanation is thus :

Eccentricity is the ratio of distance between centre of ellipse and focus to the major axis. If a triangle is drawn with one side being minor axis and another side being the line from centre of ellipse and focus, its hypoteneuse will be equal to major axis. Ratio of the line from centre of ellipse and focus and hypoteneuse is equal to sine of the angle near the end of minor axis away from centre. this angle is half of maximum value of equation of centre (paramamandaphala).

The above value of eccentricity needs some further corrections. Substract its square from unity and get the square root of resultant, you will get the compression of elliptical orbit of Sun round us (compression is ratio of minor to major axis), which is 0.999860018611 . The difference between both axes is ( 1 - 0.999860018611 )
equal to 0.00013998138915292284 mjultiplied with 1 AU ( = 149598550 Kms, = major axis), and is equal to 20941.012844263 Kms. To it, add the height of Mt Meru (Mt Kenya), which is 5.199 Kms, you get 20946.211844263 Kms. Now, assume it to be the difference between major axis (149598550 Kms) and minor axis, and compute eccentricity from the method indicated above : you get

Ecc = Sqr Root of (1 - [{1-(20946.2118 / 149598550)}^2]) = 0.0167335794081

It is the mean value of eccentricity of apparent orbit of Sun or Earth. Actual value is 0.016733761858645, computed from a more exact Suryasiddhāntic formula to be elaborated later. This exact formula has 20946.6686 Kms instead of 20946.2118 Kms as the difference between major axis and minor axis.

This Drikpakshiya value of eccentricity conforms with most modern data. It is the mean value of eccentricity on a logarithmic scale, and this mean value should be for Saurpakshuya Makar Samkrānti on Jan 14, 2009 AD. This value 0.016733761858645 should be squared and the result substracted from unity, and then get the square root of the resultant which is the ratio of both axes, ie, compression of the solar ellipse, equal to 0.99985998080434 .

Now, assume another ellipse with eccentricity exactly equal to 1 / 60, its compression will be equal to 0.99986110146471 . Multiply the difference of both compressions with 1 AU, you get the circumference of a small circle with radius little over 26.68 Kms (error of 3.7 methres due to uncertainties in the value of 1 AU).

1/60 is the actual eccentricity of Sun's orbit round Mt Meru, which gets changed to 0.016733761858645 on account of this Drikpakshiya Correction of 26.6859001229 Kms. ( NASA gives a wrong data of eccentricity 0.016704 for 2000, which is actually its updated data for April 2008, its whole table needs +8.3 years everywhere).

Starting from 1/60 as the basic eccentricity, the theorems of Drikpakshiya Suryasiddhanta are given at another website.

Now, the third term Obliquity, which gives a periodicity of ~41200 years from NASA data for 6 million years , which is 1% of the Drikpakshipa's Mahāyuga (4200000) resolved component of 4137561.9278584 years. Unfortunately, NASA does not possess long term data to arrive at better conclusions.

Following remedies for malefic planets have been taken from our panchangas published from many states of India. Dr Parasnath Ojha of Varanasi (editor of our 'Aditya Panchanga' published from Varanasi) has compiled these remedies.
(1) Original Vedic Method of Graha - Shaanti :
Vedic Astrology is a part of Vedas, hence called a Vedānga. Therefore, propitiation of planets ought to be recommended according to Vedic Philosophy, which is spiritualistic and not materialistic. Therefore, gems and stones are those who are incapable or unwilling of Yajna, Dāna (donation) and tapa (physical austerity). The best Yajna is that done in the body, eg, with Prānāyāma by giving havi to the Vaishvānara. It cannot be performed by everyone. Japa of Vedic mantra of inauspicious planet during sandhyā-vandana, havishānna in food (ie, complete abstinence from all salts, spices, chillis, oils, pickles, acids, etc in food and avoidance of food after sunset), self-cook for havi to Vaishvānara, whole night shavāsana, similar other tapas, dāna to real sadhus and monks , etc is the best way to propituiate planets. if some serious sin has been committed in past, then no amount of normal grah-shānti will do any good, and that sin must be propitiated by means of prāyashshitta (again, Prānāyāma is the best helper here too). Graha-shānti is hridaya-shuddhi (purification of psyche, including the Unconscious Mind, is real propitiation of planets).

(2) VĀRA-VRATAS : Vratas for Propitiating Planets (Tantric mantra in Vaara vratas should be replaced with Vedic mantras of Planets by Dvijas, because Tantric mantras backfire if wrongly used).

Branches of Tri-skandha Jyotisha

Vedic Jyotisha has two branches, Ganita (Siddhanta) and Phalita (Samhita plus Hora). Ganita means mathematics, but in practice it does not include the calculations involved in making horoscopes and predictions, it is merely a synonym for Siddhanta in the parlance of traditional jyotishis. Phalita or predictive astrology has two main branches, Samhita and Hora, which have many sub-branches as shown below. But in actual practice, Samhita and Hora are enumerated as separate branches due to vast difference in their subject matter, and traditional taxonomy talks of three skandhas or divisions of jyotisha: Siddhanta, Hora and Samhita, and every good Jyotishi was expected to be adept in all three divisions of Tri-skandha Jyotisha-shaastra.

Siddhanta, which literally means "theory" (siddha+anta", ie "established conclusions") is traditional astronomy for special uses of astrology, which has many varieties broadly divided into two classes
- Original apaurusheya Siddhantas, 18 in number, propounded by sages or gods
- Man made or paurusheya siddhantas, five siddhantas and another set of five siddhantas now used by traditional panchanga makers.
Samhita which includes
1. Medini Jyotisha (mundane astrology) or predictive astrology of territorial regions and is used for predicting important events such as earthquakes, weather events like storms or rains, war, national politics and economy, prices (argha-kaanda), etc, based on analysis of astrological dynamics in the horoscope of a territorial region of all sizes including whole world, and/or general transit events (graha-chaara).
2. Vaastu-shaastra which is used for construction of houses, temples, forts and towns. Varaha Mihira included iconography and sculpture under Samhita.
3. diverse topics like Shakuna-shaastra (omens), matters related to materials, trees, animals, regal attributes and items, etc.
4. Muhurta (electional astrology) for finding auspicious timing of important events and actions like war, marriage, travel, etc.
Hora: predictive astrology of individuals, which has two branches
- Jaataka which is used to analyze natal horoscopes (birth charts) known as janma-kundali. It includes Varshaphala.
- Prashna (horary astrology) from which horoscopes based on the moment and a query are made

Sapta-nādi-chakra is very useful in prediction of weather, esp of rainfall. There are two variants based on two ancient sources of Sapta-nādi-chakram :
Narapati-jaya-charyā and Krishi-Parāshara, and all later texts are based on them.
The original source of Sapta-nādi-chakra was a Tantric text 'Yāmaleeya-Svarodaya'.

Chandā-nādi represents fierce winds.
Vāyu-nādi is for somewhat more than normal winds.
Dahnā-nādi represents more temperature.
Saumyā-nādi represents normal conditions.
Neerā-nādi represents normal rains.
Jala-nādi represents more rains.
Amrit-nādi represents maximum rains.

Start from Krittikā (= number 3, numbering begins from Ashvini) in Chandā-nādi and assign nakshatras to nādis in the serpentine manner as shown in the tables above. Traditional texts present Sapta-nādi-chakra in a confusing manner , which makes it difficult to decide which of the two chakras is correct. Here, bioth have been presented in a well-ordered manner, which makes it easy to see that the left table is correct, because in it planets are placed according to their geocentric (or Merucentric) distances : Saturn-Jupiter-Mars-Sun-Venus-Mercury-Moon. In the right table, Jupiter and Sun are accorded lordship of wrong nādis.

Narapatijayacharyā can be procured from Chowkhambā Sanskrit Sansthān (Vārānasi). It gives some ancient rules for using this chakra.

Annual Rains -3: Forecasts 2009

Bhāvachalita Charts at the time of Solar Transits into Rāshis and Nakshatras

Two charts for each transit are needed for India, one Meru-centric Bhāvachalita Chart made from Mt Meru (Mt Kenyā) which is Prithvi Chakra for the whole world, and another Vidishā-centric Desha Chakra made from Vidisha (in Madhya Pradesh, India, which is geographical centre of ancient India).

These charts predict the events for the duration of solar transit, eg, one year for Mesha Samkrānti and about 14 days for Nakshatra transits.

Prithvi Chakra's Mesha chart is used for making annual global forecasts in all fields. For making rain forecasts, read the previous two pages of Annual Rains which elucidate the Parashari technique with 20 detailed examples.
In Meru-kundali, almost whole of India lies in 6th bhāva lorded by Venus, which has conjunction relation with Mars in 3rd bhāva. Venus is malefic by dint of being lord of 6th and 11th bhāvas, and is samgrihi (neutral) in Saturn's rāshi and is in complete control of Saturn due to 57' bhāvesh-drishti of Saturn on both Venus and Mars. Saturn is killer (mārakesha) and in bitter enemy Sun's rāshi. But Sun has negligible aspect on Saturn, hence Saturn is free to exercize its powers. Moon and jupiter have some relations with these effective planets, but both are debilitated. On the whole, malefic trends predominate. High aspect of effective planets on India indicate good rains, but in a malefic manner, ie, uneven and destructive consequences. South India will receive less rains than North and NW. Most effective planets are in watery nādis, esp lord venus is in sva-nādi, which means good rains, but Venus and Saturn are highly malefic. Hence, places viddha by them will experience destructive rains, if aspect is high (north India for Venus and all India for Saturn). Saturn will afflict l,m (eg, Maharashtra) and Venus will afflict r,s (eg, Rājasthān).

Desha Chakra : Vidishā-centric Bhāvachalita Chart
Desha Chakra's Mesha chart is used for making annual national forecasts in all fields.

For making rain forecasts, read the previous two pages of Annual Rains which elucidate the Parashari technique with 20 detailed examples.

Each bhāva will get rains according to astrological result for it. For instance, Saturn is lord of Lagna and 2nd, and is Mārakesh (main killer). It has bhāvesh-drishti control of 57' over both Venus and Mars. Venus rules over 5,10 and Mars over 4,11 bhāvas. In individual horoscopy, aspect on middle of bhāva is enough for prediction, but in mundane astrology a bhāva contains many regions which have different aspects. In all these four bhāvas of Mars and Venus, both lords and their overlord Saturn have higher aspects on northern parts than on southern parts, which will be the proportion of rainfall. Rains will be more than normal, and it will be destructive in 4,5,10 bhāvas, while 11th bhāva will experience drough. All four bhāvas will experience destruction and deaths, due to drought in parts of 11th (where Saturn will cause rains in places with l,m names) and due to rains in rest three bhāvas, because Mars and Venus sit in 2nd bhāva whose lord Saturn sits in 8th. Places whose name begin with r,s will be more severely affected by rains and floods by Venus in 5,10 bhāvas. Places whose name begin with d,k will be more severely affected by rains and floods by Mars in 4th bhāva and by drought in 11th. Places whose name begin with l,m will be more severely affected in these four bhāvas, besides in two bhāvas owned by Saturn. In 2nd bhāva, the worst hit area will be in the triangle bounded by Vidishā, Godāvari mouth and Vijayawādā. Cyclones or storms are not expected, rains and floods will cause havoc. The worst affected bhāva will be 8th where Saturn sits bitter enmically as lord of 2nd bhāva, l,m being viddha. On this count, I predicted in international astrological conference in Allahabad before TV crews on Mar 1,2009 that Lahore (beginning with 'L') will experience deadly attacks throughout the year. Three major blasts have already taken place. Saturn, therefore badly affects 7 out of 12 bhāvas this year. It should be propitiated.

Readers should try to make predictions for remaining 5 bhāvas according to the method illustrated above, with the help of data and charts given here. They should try to make preduictions for the Nakshatra charts which work for about 14 days, till the Sun remains in that Nakshatra.

Aircraft Crash AF447

Crash time of Airbus with 228 passengers appears to be 0207 GMT (± 7 minutes) on June 1, 2009 from internet news. Charts made from expected crash site (~30 W and 10N) indicate that a strong turbulence struck the aircraft at 02:04:19 GMT (when exalted Venus in airy naadi entered 2nd house of Killer), just after which crash took place.

The take off time of AF-447 was highly inauspicious according to Suryasiddhantic Kundalee software :

1) Lords of 9th, 10th and 7th bhaavas in 6th house,

2) Rahu in 2nd,

3) Ketu in 8th,

4) Maarkesh (main killer) Saturn in 10th house of Sun, Saturn being under highly malefic 72% lord-aspect control of Sun sitting in 6th.

5) Rahu in the house of killer (2nd) had bitter enmical aspect relation with malefic Sun.

6) Lord of ascendant Jupiter was in enemy Saturn's 3rd house and had mutual aspect relation with Sun too.

7) Lord of 8th Moon had conjunction relation with Saturn and was in 69% lord-aspect control of malefic Sun too

8) the only planet with some good potential was Mars, being in 5th house in its moolatrikona, but there too it was conjunct with highly malefic Venus which was in enemy's house and lord of 6th and 11th houses.

Thus, entire chart is dominated by killer combinations. Persons whose names begin with following letters have least chances of survival :

l, m (pierced by main killer Saturn and by malefic Venus)

retroflex t, j, l, m, u, nasal (anusvar) (pierced by second killer Moon)

h, s, d, retroflex d, vowels e and u (pierced by third killer Ketu)

l, ch, d, s, g, kh, m, vowel u (pierced by fourth killer Rahu)

v,b,r,a kh, vowels u,e,au (pierced by subsidiary killer Sun)

a,u,o (pierced by subsidiary killer Mercury)

Mars has slight benefits for names beginning with u , but Moon and ketu pierce it. No name is auspiciously pierced by any planet. There is hardly any chance of a single survival, unless someone has strong longevity combinations in his/her personal horoscope.

Merucentric Medini Jyotisha (mundane) charts reveal following points :

1) In annual Merucentric chart at the time of Mesha Pravesha (sidereal FPA, mid April), Saturn is maarakesh (main killer) and is in bitter enemy's house, in watery naadi and afflicting France and adjoining areas of North Atlantic. Rio de Janeiro was in inauspicious 6th house and in airy naadi.

2) In Merucentric chart of 4th Nakshatra which contained crash time, 3rd house contained France and adjoining areas, Saturn sitting there in watery naadi, while the lord of 3rd house Sun was in airy naadi in bitter enemical sign with Maarakesh moon and lagnesh Mercury in 12th house. Rio de Janeiro was in 6th house lorded by Mars of moolatrikona. Saturn was lord of 8th and related to maarakesh Moon and Sun in 12th, which made Saturn the main killer. The duration of 4th Nakshatra is from 25 May to 8 June 2009. 1-3 Nakshatras had better Saturn and better maarakesh, hence the evil effects of Mesha Pravesha chart had to be given during 4th Nakshatra (I've not analyzed future Nakshatras from 5 to 27 for the whole year).

3) In Merucentric chart of shashtyamsha (half day chart) which contained crash time, Saturn sits in 6th house with Moon, both in watery naadis, and 6th lord Sun sits in bitter enemy's sign in 3rd house having close relation with Saturn and Moon . Saturn was a main killer by dint of being lord of inauspicious 12th and 11th houses. Mid Atlantic was in 8th house of Death. Since lord of 2nd maarakesh Mars was in its mooltrikona and was in airy naadi together with enmical Mercury in chandaa naadi, and exalted Venus was also having full aspect on northern part of 8th house owned by it (Venus was exalted but malefic being lord of 3rd and 8th houses), there was strong turbulence in mid Atlantic, esp around equator which seems to be crash site according to charts as well as reports.

I analyzed all previous half-day shashtyamsha charts of 4th Nakshatra : worst killer combination was in 12th shashtyamsha whose duration was from 31 may 23:41:25 GMT to 1 June 12:15:58 GMT . Hence, 12th shashtyamsha had to give the ominous results of 4th Nakshatra chart, in the same way 4th Nakshatra was destined to give the result of Mesha Pravesha chart in those regions.

(1) . Verification of Vinay Jha's Rain Forecast by NASA

I ( Vinay Jha) had sent two fortnightly rain and flood forecasts in advance to Dr TN Jha, Patna's regional director of IMD (Indian Meteorological Department) for the whole month of September, 2006, who later reported that he could not properly verify the rain forecast for the whole country due to time constraints but had verified my flood forecasts which proved to be amazingly true. He encouraged me to write up and present papers at international seminars.

Later, I sent fortnightly and annual rain forecasts to 615 weather scientists all over the world in early 2007 for the forthcoming financial year. A scientist from NASA's headquarters in USA mailed me that NASA would spend time on verifying my so many rain forecasts only if I send him some
previous forecast which had been published prior to the forecast period. All my published forecasts were in Hindi, hence I sent him the forecast in English which was sent to IMD. He verified it against actual data and reported that my forecasts were "smart" and "good" , but advised me that mere forecasts would not do, I must publish my results in the form of scientific research paper. Here I attach the screenshot of this verification report sent to me from NASA headquarters climate.gsfc.nasa.gov There are three topmost scientists at the helm of Climate branch of NASA headquarters, one of whom is Dr Yogesh Sood, whose report is attached here.

(2) . Call by Royal Met. Society for Paper

I prepared this scientific paper suggested by Dr Yogesh Sood later with a view to get it published in the journal of Royal Meteorological Society of UK, because the Chief Executive of that organisation, interested in my forecasts and my techniques, asked me to send my paper to his journal. (3) . Acceptance of Vinay Jha's Paper by CAOS, IISc, Bangalore

But few weeks later, I got an invitation from CAOS, IISc ( Centre for Atmospheric Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore) to send my scientific paper for evaluation ( because I had mailed a lot of my rain forecasts to all concerned scientists there).

On the right is the scanned copy of acceptance letter sent by the Dr GS Bhatt, Chairman of India's premier scientific organisation in this field, who also invited me to participate in the forthcoming international conference "Celebrating the Monsoons ".

Later, CAOS also sent me videp recording of my presentation of this paper at Tower Hall inside Indian Institute of Science campus in Bangalore on July 24, 2007, at the aforementioned international conference.

(4) Consensus about Suryasiddhanta to be the Basis for
National Panchangas

A 2-day conference-cum-workshop was convened at Sampoornanand Sanskrit University of Varanasi on 17-18 Oct 2005 in which it was unanimously decided that Suryasiddhanta and its updated Makaranda Table must be the sole basis for national level panchangas.
This conference was organised by various organisations and was convened by Dr Nagendra Pandey, currently Head of Dept of Jyotisha in Sampoornanand Sanskrit University of Varanasi. Over 200 famous astrologers and academics from six Hindi speaking states participated.

There were nearly 200 important astrologers and scholares all of whom cannot be named here. It was an epoch conference, which resulted in publication of Suryasiddhantic panchangas from Orissa, Chattisgarh, UP, Bihar, etc., as well as in rectification of old panchangas on Suryasiddhantic principles.

Suryasidhhantic panchanga making software was demonstrated at the workshop there by me. As a result of this conference, many new Suryasidhhantic panchangas were started from various states of India on the basis of this software.
This conference decided that all existing panchangas should be reformed on the basis of Suryasiddhanta, although only one university has decided to do so after this conference. There were many proponents of modern astronomy in this conference, but in the end they agreed that for astrological purposes Suryasiddhanta was the best choice.

Interpretation of Horoscope : Basics

In Vedic Astrology, horoscope is defined as that portion of actions of past lives which have resulted into birth into present specie. If one is born as a human being, traits of dog or insects will remain muted and such traits will exhibit themselves neither in the horoscope nor in actual present life. There are 84 lakhs(8.4 millions) species according to Vedic Astrology, and traits of all these specie lie dormant in the Karmaashaya (sum total of actions of past lives) of a person. Active portion of Karmaashaya has caused present birth, and Kundali (horoscope) is the fruit of this set of actions (kundali is the phala of karmas residing in Pradhaan Karmaashaya).

In Vedic Jyotisha, there are 16 types of horoscopes for any particular person (or animal), known as Shodash-varga (Divisional charts symbolized as D-1 to D-60), most important of which are Raashi-chakra (i.e.,D-1, and its subsidiary Bhaava-chalita), Navaamsha-kundali (D-9) and Shashtyamsha-kundali (D-60) which is, however, rarely used due to inaccuracy in birthtime. But other 13 vargas are also all-important in their respective fields.

Shashtyamsha-kundali is the most important of all 16 vargas because its subject is "everything" and its vimshopaka-bala (strength) is more than that of any other divisional chart (varga) according to Brihat-Paraashara-Horaashaastra( BPHS). Shashtyamsha-kundali is the complete manifestation of Active Karmaashaya, and all other 15 vargas are individual manifestations of Shashtyamsha-kundali in their respective fields. For instance, if career and achievements is to be studied, Dashamaamsha-kundali (D-10) is more important than any other kundali, but D-1 and D-60 will not cease to operate in any field. D-9 (Navaamsha-kundali) is most important for studying relations with spouse, but it exerts influence upon some other fields also. Other divisional charts do not operate beyond their own field, only D-60, D-1 and D-9 in descending order exert widespread influences. BPHS clearly delineates the fields of these divisional charts. Kundalee software at this website aslo mentions these fields alongwith their varga.

During Kaliyuga (Kali Age) materialism overwhelms other considerations. Hence the divisional chart (D-1, i.e.,Raasi-chart and Bhaava-chalita) dealing with Body and its Bhoga (things to be enjoyed by the body) has become all-important. D-9 is given attention because it deals with spouses which is all-important for kali-yugi persons. Other divisional charts are rarely analysed. D-60 is most difficult to make because it requires precise computations. In D-60, 2 minutes of error in birthtime will result in a shift of one sign (30 degrees). Strength of planets in divisional charts depends upon whether planets are in the middle of a house or near its end. Hence error of 30 seconds in birthtime will drastically change the outcome. In previous ages, precision of computation was a problem. Now, computers have come to our aid, but most of astrologers have discarded the original method of computations and base their computations upon modern astronomy. This problem has been dealt with in the book on Surya-siddhaanta which can be downloaded from the bottom of homepage.

Besides these 16 kundalis, there are kundalis made by putting each planet (excluding Rahu-Ketu) in the first house instead of the ascendant (lagna). D-1 is made by regarding ascendant as the middle of first house. Surya-kundali is made by putting the Sun in the middle of first house. Thus 7 kundalis are made from 7 planets. Sun-kundali and Muun-kundali are most important among these 7 horoscopes, because the Sun influences three houses (9, 10, 11) and Moon influences five houses (1, 2, 4, 9, 11). Lagna-kundali (i.e., D-1, known as Raashi-chakra and its modified version Bhaava-chalita) is more important than any planetary kundali, because all 12 houses are studied with the help of lagna-kundali. Therefore, Lagna-kundali, Sun-kundali and Moon-kundali are combined together to make the Sudarshana-chakra which has some unique features of its own.

Saturn influences two houses : 8, 12 ; other planets influence one house each : Mars 3, Mercury 6, Jupiter 5 and Venus 7. What does it mean ?

7th house from ascendant is for Kaama (libido, spouse, extra-marital affairs, besides some other fields). 7th from Venus exerts same influences on these fields. Similarly, 3rd from Mars should be studied for those subjects which are studied in 3rd from ascendant.

In all, we have 16 divisional horoscopes and 7 planetary horoscopes to analyse. These are most important horoscopes. These 23 horoscopes control the entire lifespan of a person.

Besides, there are varsha-pravesha and maasa-pravesha kundalis. A varsha-pravesha kundali is the horoscope of that moment when sidereal Sun attains same sign, degree, minute and second of arc as in the natal chart (D-1). This varsha-pravesha influences the course of events for one year. Add 30 degrees to sidereal Sun and you will get various maasa-pravesha kundalis, each effective for a solar month. Effects of these varsha-pravesha and maasa-pravesha horoscopes are important, but Vimshottari is more important. There are 1440 varsha-pravesha and maasa-pravesha horoscopes during 120 years.

Each horoscope in the shodash-varga has its Aarudha-pada (Aarurha-pada) horoscopes, 12 padas for each house and 7 padas for 7 planets. Thus, each varga has 21 subsidiary pada-kundalis. 16 vargas have,therefore, 336 pada kundalis. There are 1799 horoscopes to analyze in a person's life if 1440 annual and monthly horoscopes are added to 336 pada horoscopes, 16 main divisional horoscopes and 7 planetary horoscopes. Besides, there are 42 types of dashaas.

In actual practice, things are not so difficult. 1440 annual and monthly horoscopes are not analyzed at any given time. One needs only the annual and monthly horoscopes at any given moment. 16 divisional charts are also not needed always. Very few aarudha-pada kundalis are actually needed. Hence, if one learns how to interpret a horoscope, it is not difficult to analyze relevant charts. Vimshottari dashaa is effective for all persons and other types of dashaas may be neglected if you do not find time. Most of them are not relevant in Kaliyuga.

Results of these diverse charts may contradict each other and in such circumstances it becomes difficult to make predictions. Even is a single chart, different planets may exert contradictory influences upon a house. To make things easy, Paraashara Rishi created the system of Ashtaka-varga, which gives definite results even in doubtful conditions.

Shortcut Method of Reading a Horoscope

When a person in problem approaches you, find out the current Vimshottari dashaas first of all. Note the timings of Mahaa-dashaa, antar-dashaa and pratyantara-dashaa initially, because sukshma-dashaa and praana-dashaa require very accurate birthtime. Then read the bhaava-chalita kundali, and find out the conditions of planets associated with first three dashaas. In the kundalee software supplied at this website, bhaava-chalita kundali is at the right side bottom of the page "spashta-grahaadi". If the 'zoom' button is clicked, enlarged bhaava-chalita kundali with aspect-table (drishti-chakra) will open up. Try to correlate the dashaa-kaaraka planets with timings of problems and within a minute you will locate the malfunctioning planet. Now you can rectify the error in birthtime by synchronizing the time of problem with onset time of dashaa of malfunctioning planet. If a few very good and very bad events in the life of a person are analyzed in this manner, birthtime error can be reduced to less than a second. Our KUNDALEE software guaranttees 100% accurate matching of Vimshottari dashaas with actual events.

Bhaava-chalita kundali does not always help, because other divisional kundalis may override the verdict of bhaava-chalita kundali in their own domain. Hence, relevant divisional chart should be analyzed also. Varsh-kundali and maasa-kundali always exert infuences, although less than divisional kundalis. In the end, ashtaka-varga may be resorted to if doubt remains. But ashtaka-varga is much less powerful than vimshottari. Ashtaka-varga is much more reliable than gochar-phala of lunar sign; the latter is included in ashtaka-varga.

In nutshell, this is how one should interpret a horoscope. Desire to help a person in distress should be the only objective of an astrologer, otherwise even a perfect software will not help you. Jyotisha is a divine science and requires moral rectitude more than bookish knowledge.

Difference between Saur and Drig positions of planets and of Lagna (ascendant) varies from time to time at a non-uniform rate. In Napoleon's chart, we find great difference in values of Jupiter and Mercury, for instance, but in other cases we may have different results in this regard, which is due to basis differences in computational methods of Suryasiddhanta and physical astronomy. Those who assume Saur planets to by physical conclude Suryasiddhanta to be outdated and lose all interest in it, and consequently do not try to compare Saur and Drig horoscopes. In ancient ages, difference between Saur and Drig planetary positions was even greater (not analyzed properly by Western commentators because they had to prove their fallacious points), yet ancient scholars used Suryasiddhanta for all astrological purposes. Hence, readers are requested to compare the astrological results of Saur and Drig horoscopes, which will convince them that Saur planets are not physical planets. We cannot observe Saur planets sensorily ; only their influences can be watched.

Rashi-charts of both Saur and Drig methods are the same in this case, in spite of difference in planetary positions. But Bhaavachalita in Saur methods differs from Rashi chart considerably. In popular methods, Rashi chart is treated as D1 (first divisional chart) , but in Saur method Bhaavachalita of Rashi chart is treated as D1. At the bottom, four pictures give the details of D1 and vimshottari from both methods, whose comparative analtsis is here presented with reference to real life events which can be checked from Napoleon's biographies whose link has been given above.

COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

Moon was in 4th charana of Uttarashadha in both methods. Hence, Surya-mahadasha was running at the time of birth. But owing to a difference of 44':19" in true Moon in Drig and Saur methods, there was a difference of 4 months at the time of birth, which can be viewed in pictures 3 & 4 below. If lunar year is applied to both methods, this difference of 4 months remains constant throughout his life, but if solar year is used for Drig (popular) method, this difference keeps on increasing at the rate of one extra year at every 32.54 years in the life of native. Let us first compare Saur method (Suryasiddhantic, with lunar year for Vimshottari) with popular Drig method (physical astronomy, with solar year for Vimshottari) in the case of major events in the life of Napoleon.

Suryasiddanta : Proof of Brahma's Age

Many readers might have heard or read about Kalpa, Brahmaa's Age, etc, without having ever seen any computational proof in favour of or against these ancient notions.

Verse 20 of Suryasiddhanta says that one Kalpa (4320 million years) equals one day of Brahmaa. His night is also of same duration. Hence, his year is equal to 720 Kalpas. Since Brahmaa's Paramaayu (age) is of 100 his years (verse 21), it is equal to 72000 Kalpas or 311040 billion years ! A fantastic figure ! Can we find some rationale behind it, or is it mere mythology ?

Suryasiddhantic year is equal to 365.25875648148148148148148148148 ( = 1577917828 days in a Mahayuga, divided by 4320000 years in a Mahayuga). Similarly, Suryasiddhantic synodical month is equal to (1577917828 days divided by 53433336 synodical months in a Mahayuga =) 29.530587946071718224742696207476 days.

In 19 years, there are 6939.9163731481481481481481481481 days. Its nearest approximation is 235 lunar months which equal to 6939.6881673268537828145336087555 , having a shortfall of 0.22820582129436533361453939314815 days in 19 years. In over 129 (129.40330697340043134435657692381) such 19 year cycles equalling 2458.6628324946081955427749615524 years, this shortfall will accumulate to a shortfall of one lunar month. This ratio is very important for understanding some mysterious aspects of ancient Ganita Jyotisha.

In ~5000 years, there will be a shortfall of two lunar months. It means two extra lunar months will need to be added to the calendar to reach upto Mesha Samkraanti (ie, start of solar year). That is why Kaliyuga is believed to have started with Mesha Samkraanti in Mahga by traditional panchanga makers, but now Mesha Samkraanti coincides with year start with Chaitra in normal years unaffected by intercalary (adhimaasa or malamaasa) months.

Kaliyuga started 1955880000 years after the start of Creation (Srishti) according to Suryasiddhanta. If 2458.6628324946 years give one extra lunar month, 1955880000 will give 795505.57894736842105263158557207 extra lunar months. Let us round it off to nearest integer to 795506 months. After 12 extra lunar months , we get same lunar month. Hence leave out 66292 * 12 = 795504 lunar months, and we get two remaining months. Hence, the month at the start of creation was Agrahaayana. Now, we get the reason behind the naming of this month whose literal meaning is "First Month of the Year" ! That is why Lord Krishna in Gita says Agrahaayana is the divine month among all mongths. Its synonym is Maargasheersha, which literally means "at the head of the road (of Sun or or Year)".

In this computation, we had to round off 795505.578947368421 because both Kaliyuga and Creation started with New Moons and therefore we needed integer (795506). In rounding off, we had to tolerate an error of 0.42105263157894736841442792755131 lunar months or of 12.433931766767039252327609103494 days during 1955880000 years. What will be the value of this error during entire Creation ?

Srishti is 17064000 years less than Kalpa, hence Srishti or Creation is of 4302936000 years. If error of 12.433931766767039252327609103494 days accumulate during 1955880000 years, total error during entire Creation will be ( 4302936000 / 1955880000 = 2.2 ) 2.2 times more, of 27.354649886887486355120740027688 days , which is slightly more than a sidereal lunar month ( whose Suryasiddhantic value is 1577917828 / 57753336 = 27.321674162683866435005589980118) by a small amount of 0.032975724203619920115150047577737 days.

During one year of Brahmaa or 720 Kalpas, this apparent error accumulates to 23.74252142660634248290803425597 days. It has a shortfall of
-3.5791527360775239520975557241396 days in one year of Brahmaa. the latter accumulates to -357.91527360775239520975557241396 days in 100 years of Brahmaa. It is 3.5482182548917765128432179243635 days more than 12 synodical month or one synodical year of 354.36705535286061869691235448964 days. In Suryasiddhanta, there is no explanation of this 3.5482182548917765128432179243635 days in 100 years of Brahmaa (72000 Kalpas) , but it is noteworthy that this apparent error is again 1% of one synodical year, and may represent one hundred Brahmaas in one lifetime of a Vishnu (7200000 Kalpas) , and 60 such Vishnus will equal one Shiva.

If we leave aside Vishnu and Shiva (not mentioned in extant Suryasiddhanta), this apparent error of 3.5482182548917765128432179243635 days in 72000 Kalpas is equivalent to an error of 4.2578619 seconds in one Kalpa of 4320 million years.

There were no computers in those days. How such a mathematics was carried out by the maker of Suryasiddhanta ? The explanation of Magha in the start of Kaliyuga, and of Agrahaayana as the first month of year, as well of Paramaayu of Brahmaa have no other possible explanation.

Once you install Kundalee and start using it seriously for checking horoscopes according to well known ancient methods of BPHS without any bias, all your doubts about Suryasiddhanta will vanish. Suryasiddhanta is not a work of physical astronomy, it is a sacred and secret text of astronomy of Bhuvaloka which cannot be perceived sensorily, and its only proof is astrological verification by means of mundane and individual horoscopes, which western "experts" never attempted. As long as Suryasiddhanta is tested with reference to physical astronomy, it will appear to be wrong, and any discussion will lead to useless controversy. Suryasiddhanta is an astrological text, not a physical or chemical or biological one, and it must be tested astrologically. The materialistic attitude which rejects the existence of bhuvaloka is the reason behind prejudices against Suryasiddhanta. Gita says that those who do not accept any reality beyond the sensory world are destined to hell.

Scientific ( Objective ) Method of Comparing Astrological Softwares

I want to address to those persons who are seriously worried about real problem astrology is facing today : its questionable credibility as a reliable tool of prediction. There are large regions in the world where astrology is banned. In India. there are sections of society and there are institutions where one cannot talk about astrology positively. I devoted my life to find some means which I believe can restore this falling credibility of astrology.

Now I am outlining the basic guidelines of "scientific method" which should be applied for evaluating an astrological software.

(1) Astrological softwares must be evaluated solely on the basis of their astrological applicability ( and not on the basis of mathematical or theoretical concepts, which may be clarified later ), esp on the basis of "predictive astrology" (Phalita). If Phalita is wrong consistently for a sufficiently large number of cases, whatever be the mathematical or theoretical soundness of the software, it is rubbish. Conversely, if Phalita is reliable consistently for a sufficiently large number of cases, whatever be the mathematical or theoretical oddity of the software, it is valuable. An astrological software must be evaluated on the basis of its astrological performance and not on the basis of one's concepts about astronomy or mathematics.

(2) The aim should be clear from the start : if software based on physical astronomy is to be compared with Suryasiddhantic software, other things must not be allowed to creep in, and both types of softwares must be compared with comparable parameters. For instance, I have fine tuned Kundalee software on the basis of BPHS (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, and Laghu Parashari, and related texts).

(3) The method of evaluation must be objective and never subjective. A blind quiz is a subjective method, and only the questioner knows true answers. How it can be established whether the questioner is a liar or not ? In a scientific method, everything must be clear and verifiable by everyone on the Earth for all time to come.

(4) The data which is to be tested must be universally acceptable and easily accessible to everyone in the world. Hence, I propose horoscopes of such figures like Napoleon, Nehru, Hitler, etc ought to be used for testing softwares and not of those persons whose data is not easlily verifiable by everyone. Birthdata and events must be verifiable from independent and reliable sources. Those persons must not be used whose birthdata are doubtful, eg of Obama, Osama, etc.

(5) Only very important good or bad events should be selected for testing softwares, because strong events are easily identifiable by means of two or three components of a Vedic horoscope : Vimshottari chart and D1, plus relevant divisional chart pertinent to the problem. Such strong events are death, some highly fortunate event like victory on war or bad event like a defeat or a serious accident. Less strong events are influenced by so many factors that analysis is time consuming and often uncertain.

(6) There should be no hurry. Verification of data, analysis of horoscope, counter-views, etc need some time, eg a week or two.

Subjective Method of Comparing Astrological Software :

As someone put it, "software has got nothing to do with predictions. It is ultimately the human brain that is involved in predicting the events."
Those who really want to test the software are welcome, because such a test will serve the cause of astrology. But it must be borne in mind that no software in the world can predict an event. A good astrologer makes good forecasts from a somewhat bad software, and a bad astrologer makes bad forecasts from a good software. Moreover, if some persons approve a software by means of blind quiz, how many persons in the world will value their verdict ? A blind quiz project is a good exercise for sharpening one's own astrological wits and nothing more, its results about any software will not be valued by others, who will try their own blind quizes. Those who do not value the certificates or verification reports issued by NASA, IISc, many universities, &c will not value any test reports of such subjective (or perhaps even objective ?)tests.

Origin and Meaning of Horoscopic Houses

ORIGIN & MEANING OF BHAAVAS (Horoscopic Houses)

There are 12 houses in horoscopes in Indian, Chinese, European and ancient Egyptial and Mesopotamian horoscopes. Names of these houses are also highly similar, pointing towards some common origin of astrology. There is a dearth of external evidence for tracing this common origin, but internal evidences are galore. Let us discuss some.
According to Surya-siddhaanta (the bedrock of mathematical portion of ancient Indian astrology), LAGNA (ascendant) is defined as that point of the ecliptic which touches the eastern horizon at any given moment. Other eleven mansions are defined with respect to Lagna. Hence all mansions are parts of the ecliptic. Since the ecliptic is elliptical, all twelve mansions should be unequal. Therefore, the mansions of Indian astrology should be reckoned from Bhaava-chalita and not from the Raashi-chakra.

The Raashi-chakra is a circular disc running along the zodiac with all 12 Raashis being exactly equal to 30 degrees, while the measures of twelve bhaavas (dvaadash-bhaava) change with time and place ; that is why it is called Chalita (i.e., movable or changeable). It takes some time and energy to compute the bhaava-chalita. Exact method of computing the bhaava-chalita according to traditional Indian Siddhaantas has been long forsaken and forgotten. An overwhelming majority of astrologers use the Raashi-chakra for making predictions for saving time; most of not-so-learned astrologers do not even know that Raashi-chakra should not be directly used for making predictions, its only use is to determine places of exaltation (uchcha), debility(neecha), friendship or enmity among planets, heliacal setting (asta), aspects (drishti) and similar phenomena. In both Rashi-chakra and Bhaava-chalita, lagna is always placed at the centre of first mansion. But in Raashi-chakra, successive mansions are computed by merely adding 30 degrees to the lagna, whereas in the bhaava-chalita bhaavas are reckoned independently.

In the picture below, some bhaavas make larger angle with the centre while others make smaller angles due to ellipcity of the ecliptic (in this picture bhaavas 1 or 7 are shown as being less than bhaava 10 or 4, but at other times the reverse may be true). It is because of the Keplerian law of equal area in equal time : all bhaavas must have equal areas and not equal angles. Europe (Johannes Kepler) discovered this law much later, but Indian astrologers possessed the mathematical method of computing bhaavas of the ellipse millenia before Kepler. Method of computing declination of the Sun was also well known, which is also an attribute of ellipse. Rectified path-lengths of epicycloidal and hypocycloidal paths of planets and moon is given in Surya-siddhaanta, while Europe discovered it in modern times.

Twelve Bhaavas were conceived according to a well designed logical plan which has never been elucidated in any ancient or modern treatise of any country. Here, some of these ancient secrets are being explained for the first time. As pointed above, Lagna is that portion of the ecliptic which lies in the east. The entire house of Lagna is approximately 30 degrees (plus or minus few degrees), half of it remains below the horizon (see Medini kundalis in other pages of this website). Tenth House (Dasham bhaava) lies at the zenith. Seventh House lies in the west, and Fourth House lies below the onlooker. Hence, Fourth House came to signify Land, Mother (Earth), Vehicle, which lie below. Tenth House signifies Father (God the Father or Dyaus-Pitr symbolised the Sky in Vedic and PIE) and glory. First House symbolises birth into this world, and therefore first house represents life, body, health,etc. Rebirth into body is the result of Kaama (libido), hence Seventh House represents Kaama. All twelve houses exhibit this cause-consequence relationship, as shown below :

4 th	Land, Mother	10 th : Father,honour,career : 4th symbolizes land, 10 th gives honour, kingdom, etc. Mother-Father contrast between these two houses should be noted.
5 th	Knowledge(Vidyaa)	11 th : Income : Income is a result of worldly accomplishments.
6 th	Enemy,disease	12 th : Expense, loss : Subjects of 6 th and 12 th houses have a cause-consequence relationship.

Thus, all twelve bhaavas can be grouped into six pairs having cause-consequence or contrasting relations. These six pairs can be further reduced to two contrasting divisions. Bhaava-10 lies towards the zenith. Adjacent to it are 9th and 11th houses. These three houses can be clubbed together as houses of 'Fortune,honour,rise,income'. There is close affinity in subjects of these houses. All symbolize 'RISE' towards the sky, which is the meaning of houses which lie towards the sky.

Similarly, 3rd and 5th houses are neighbours of 4th. These three houses symbolozes bases or causes of the subjects of sky-houses(9,10,11). Vigour, land and knowledge provide the foundation upon which one may rise towards the sky and gain money or honour. Hence, 9-10-11 symbolize SKY or Protector (Fortune-Action-Income nurtures and protects like a father), and 3-4-5 symbolize EARTH or BASE or FOUNDATION. Both triplicities have a strong mutual cause-consequence relation.

In a similar manner, houses 12-1-2 and 6-7-8 form remaining two triplicities, both being detrimental. The malevolence of 6,8 and 12 are well known. 2nd house is the cause of death and determines the lordship of death. But it is also the house of wealth and eyes, which strengthen bondage to this-worldliness and cause recurring death-rebirth cycles. 7th house is also the cause of death and bondage : Kaama(libido). Brihat-Paraashara-Horaashaashtra clearly states that planets residing in 6-7-8 houses determine whether a person should go to heaven, hell or be reborn into this world.

Horoscope is the result of actions of past lives. Sum total of all actions of all past lives do not contribute into the horoscope. Actions which bears results conducive for a birth into human specie join together, and if they overwhelm non-human traits, birth into human specie in ensured. Other actions remain dormant, bearing no result in the present human life. But if a human being accumulates sins, these bad acts will combine with similar dormant acts and may cause a non-human rebirth if such acts surpass human traits. If Saturn and Mercury reside in 6-7-8 houses and auspicious planets do not reside there, the person should go to Hell. Hell has two meanings in Indian tradition. One hell is birth into some animal or insect form. Another hell is real hell : torment without getting any birth at all, till the sins are purged.

The afore-mentioned four triplicities are repeated in the plan of Aarudha-padas as describrd in BPH. Houses 12-1-2 and 6-7-8 are never allowed to become aarudha-padas; only 3-4-5 and 9-10-11 can become padas. Pada means the steps or means through which a work is done. If the means is bad the task can not be accomplished. Hence only good houses are allowed to become aarudha-padas.

3rd and 11th houses were found to be auspicious in mant respects, and 1rst and 7th houses were auspicious in a majority of instances. Hence, in the end of Kaarakadhyaya (BPH), Sage Paraashara said that houses 2,3,6,8,11,12 were inauspicious. According to this classification, we can present the following modified picture of bhaava-chalita. The symmetry between upper and lower halves is remarkable.

A simplified view has been presented here. But it is sufficient to convinve anyone that the concept of twelve mansions did not originate without any logical plan. Moreover, this overall plan behind the concept of Twelve Houses is based upon ancient Indian philosophy of the Vedic tradition. it is impossible to believe that that such a system was imported into India from some non-Vedic society. Nowhere in world we can find a society in ancient times which believed in such concepts which contributed in the evolution of the ideas behind Dvaadash-bhaava, Kaama causing death, bondage and rebirth and renunciation of Kaama leading to emancipation; Sky symbolizing Father, Earth as mother, wealth as a companion of Killer (Maarkesha),etc.

This plan of horoscope was stylized into following form in remote antiquity, which is suggested by names like Kendra for Houses 1, 4, 7, 10 and Trikona for 5, 9, because Houses 1, 4, 7, 10 actually reside in the Kendra (central region) and Houses 5 and 9 actually are triangular (Trikona) in shape. Other designs for horoscope popular in India or elsewhere do not fit such definitions. This design of Kundali (horoscope) is traditionally popular in the region which was known as Aryaavarta in ancient times, and is in consonance with definitions found in most ancient Indian treatises of astrology. The directional notions East, West, Zenith and Nadir is not used because it is not needed in horoscopic astrology. In national astrology we will discuss another type of directional design of zodiacal signs. In the left hand side picture, first house in the house of ascendant or Lagna.
